Hey Guys

I got an ATI Rage II+ DVD PCI card that i wanted to try out, but a couple pins on the main chip package were shorting. So i used a razer to try and separate them (ive done this before on other chips) but the pin was brittle from oxidation i think cause it broke clean off.

If looking at the card from above, its the first pin at the bottom left. I know with a lot of these cards not all pins are used since that could just be a ground or extra power pin. Often thats the case with the corner pins.

Ive been trying to find a chip diagram to see what that pin does but no luck. The card still POSTs and works in DOS but i havent tested 3D yet.

Since it doesn't go up in smoke, I reckon you could simply try it in 3D?

Afaik, this particular card model isn't anything special or rare, is it?

And depending on how much other parts you have laying around, you could perhaps designate this damaged card as a testing card. If you don't have a spare, then you're doing something wrong as one should always have spares 😁

edit: Posting a pic of the card and a pic showing all the damage might help also, as some of us have keen eyes and are able to spot any potential problems better than a terminator could 😜.

Yeah i don't think its particularly rare, but it is still a hard to find card these days. Its got a damn cool VBIOS POST as well.

Will take a picture and post it as soon as i can.

*Edit - Im getting text corruption in DOS mode so i think its safe to say that pin was important. Damn fragile TSOP packages.

Bummer...but all of us have had similar experiences (I even had an explosion! 😁) and it sucks, but it also simply comes with the territory and we all know it.
