In before quantum3d, 3dlabs, silicon graphics and every other workstation/server/enterprises video card maker.
Not saying any of them used molex connectors, but they had external power on sone.
To me its still 3Dfx who did 1st game card with external supply. Because it was reference card. This canopus was non reference design (something like today overclocked editions) limited to one board seller.
