Was out in the middle of nowhere for 3 months so decided to treat myself. Overkill yes but what the hell it's just money right?

Ordered the parts about a day or two before coming back so still waiting on the video card, memory and monitor.

Spent a couple of hours yesterday putting the parts I did get together.

Debating on wether to stick with the onboard audio or use the Soundblaster ZXR from my old build.

Also I brought several 2TB SSD's with me for backup so I'm going to take those out of the external enclosures and use those for my game & data drive. Either 4 or 5 in a RAID5 array. No platters here!

Will post pics once I get the rest of the parts in.

Those insane SSDs like the 950 Pro are really a reason to upgrade these days, though I'm still waiting for even bigger stuff to come.

Also, "several 2TB SSD's"? Some serious cash to burn! 😁 I'm starting to seriously consider that maybe, SSDs are actually more reliable backup media than mechanical platters? You must know it better than I do... (those prices though)

Offshore? Military base? Antarctica? ISS?

Anyway, enjoy it man! 😎

The only reason I brought SSD's with me for backup was mainly the amount of data storage available in a small size and secondly reliability. I brought 4-5 2TB ones since on previous deployments hard drive failure would happen a lot and there would be cases where you need someplace to put data but you don't have any drives. That wasn't really any issue on this deployment since I brought so many. Suprisingly none of the 6TB drives I brought failed at all but on this deployment I was out there for a shorter period of time.

2x platter hard drives is just fine for reliability and price but they should be scanned regularly and replaced every 5 years.

Added some pics.

Changed the video card and 10GBE NIC location last night and removed an SSD.

So far the thing I've noticed the most is how quiet this system is:
SSD's are of course quieter than hard drives.
The PSU fan doesn't kick in unless it hits a certain temp.
Fans are larger than old system.
Also the last case was open on all sides whereas this one is closed.

Was using an M.2 Samsung 850 via PCI Express on my old system so haven't noticed anything speed wise.

The POST goes extremely fast versus what I'm used to so that's cool. I wish companies would start doing the same thing on servers!

The Asus motherboard is very friendly and includes an easy overclocking wizard for the everyman but plenty of tweaking options for those who want to.

It's nice having all of the USB ports be USB 3. I was limited to two USB 3 on my previous system so that was annoying.

The 10GBE NIC is currently not being used but I plan to buy NICS for my QNAP NAS and my freenas server and am looking at some $800 switches but that'll be in a month or so.

The old case was a PITA removing and adding hard drives whereas this case makes it easy. Only issue is you are limited to 2 3.5" slots and 3 2.5" slots. Really should be more than enough for a desktop anyway.

For some reason I was able to use the Windows 8/8.1 key from my previous system and it activated after I put it in during the Windows 10 Anniversary setup. Mabye I never used it? Might go back and check when I clean up the old system.

Haven't purchased the monitor yet. Going to visit with my folks next week for a couple of weeks so I'll probably pick it up after.

oh, The top of the case looks funny because I took the top door off. I put the case to the right of me and the door swings out to the left. Also those things tend to break easily so I just took it off.

Finally got the monitor. Spent quite a few weeks agonizing over it. Decided to go with the XB271HU and I'll be keeping this one until 4K OLED screens are cheap so a decade or so. (Which is average for me and monitors)
Currently have it setup as a dual monitor with my Dell since I was informed after I got back from deployment that my job is now a telework position.

Spent a couple of minutes playing Doom (2016) and the game did feel more responsive and the greater resolution and monitor size definetly helps you feel more engrossed in the game but I wasn't OMG AMAZED by the 144hz 2560x1440. Mabye I'm just old? Or mabye just need to try out Crysis on this monitor. Too much brown with Doom. 😀
