It appears that Bethesda and id Software have removed Denuvo from DOOM. While id Software did not state anything at all in the release notes of the latest update for DOOM, Denuvo is no longer present in the latest version of id Software’s shooter.

This is the second game for which Denuvo has been completely removed. The first one was Playdead’s Inside.

Bethesda and id Software have not commented on this yet, and have not revealed the reasons why this anti-tamper tech has been removed.

However, it appears that Denuvo’s removal was due to both DOOM and Inside being cracked in such a short amount of time.

According to a Redditor, who claims to be a game developer for a company that started using Denuvo, publishers do not have to pay for Denuvo (and claim a refund) if their games are cracked within 3 months of release. Moreover, and in order to claim the refund, publishers must remove Denuvo from their games.

As the Redditor claimed:

“I work for a large studio that started using Denuvo recently. I’m neutral on piracy and pirate TV shows a lot, so don’t give me a hard time, certainly not here to judge.

I do want to explain what happened here, Denuvo Software Solutions offers a guarantee, if your Denuvo game is cracked within a certain time (3 months is normal), you do not have to pay for Denuvo. Part of claiming the refund is you must remove Denuvo from your game.”

As always, take with this with a grain of salt, however this logic does seem to apply to both DOOM and Inside, as both of these games were cracked within this timeframe.

I cant help but be amused at this news. I pirate most games. Most are NOT worth the money to play. I never finished doom, and it has been over a week since I touched deus ex. I do however buy games, that I enjoy. I shelled out a lot of scratch for the full version of CIV 6.

I'm curious to find out if the removal of drm has any affects on FPS.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Pirating a game that was shareware to start with 😕 ?

Details on Denuvo on the games I've followed, some are probably up to the publisher:
Requires activation on first start to Denuvo servers
Requires activation on patches to Denuvo servers
Requires activation on hardware changes to Denuvo servers
Supposedly requires activation on Windows updates (probably the ones that are really build changes) to Denuvo servers
Some implementations have required internet on every start of the game to Denuvo servers (Vulkan ver of Doom don't know if that was ever fixed before this).

So far no issues with system vulnerabilities, explorer crashes, CD issues, multiple DRM drivers on the system as with Safedisc or Securom. No issues.
Supposedly can cause a performance hit but probably a low percentage depending on the CPU. No one knows for sure since no one has a ver of a game without Denuvo.....except Denuvo has supposedly been removed from Doom so mabye some benchmarks can prove it.
Issues with mods or compatibility fixes that rely on modification of the game executable.
Supposedly Denuvo protected games don't work in Wine.

Ability to play games offline (without relying on Steam) and game preservation are an issue. Only a few games have been able to trick Denuvo so far by emulating Steam but progress has been pretty good.

I pirate almost all modern games that I have legally bought, just so I can play them without being hampered/annoyed/ruined by disgusting DRM. And no, I do not play multiplayer, so pirated games work nice for my purpose.

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

I like this quote:

I’m neutral on piracy and pirate TV shows a lot, so don’t give me a hard time, certainly not here to judge.

translation:

"I would like to think piracy is bad because stuff..and peer pressure, but really I do pirate TV shows a lot, please don't kill me."

Neutral is definitely not what he/she is.

Yeah...

this game was cracked months ago anyway, and getting rid of it save them some money, the intention of Denuvo is mainly to block piracy during the launch month of the game anyway, and in that they succeeded

it would be nice if all the other Denuvo games were doing the same,

In other Doom 2016 related news, bots have now been added to the multiplayer, via the latest patch. Brilliant!...

...Except that you can only use the bots when you're online. Seriously 😠 Most people want to play against bots (computer controlled opponents) because their machine is not online for some reason, but you can only use these bots to fill empty player slots on the online servers!

Still, hopefully this will be fixed in a later patch.

...And speaking of DOOM 2016's seemingly never ending patches and updates... It's great that the game is receiving so many free updates and new features from it's makers, of course it is. But almost all of it is multiplayer stuff, and many, many people (myself included) only play the game's single player campaign. And this is a problem because the updates and patches are huge (one of them was a 19GB patch!), even though those of us who only play it single player don't want or need these patches. And on the PS4 at least (as in my case), hard drive space is limited, and DOOM 2016 now takes up 79GB, and that's only until the next update, when it will go up again.

You can't tell the PS4 to only download certain patches, it's all or nothing, and if you try to go online with the game then it downloads them all anyway. As you might imagine, we PS4 DOOM 2016 lovers aren't too happy about the way it's eating up hard drive space.

Oh well. It's still a fantastic game, single player campaign, at least. I don't much care for the multiplayer, myself.
