Who actually owns the rights to Amiga? Last I heard the company had changed ownership so many times it was like a joint passed around at a Phish concert.

I'm curious, because I wonder what it would take $$ wise for the people that love it to purchase the rights and just open-source the thing. My guess is it wouldn't be cheap, somewhere in the range of 5-10 million.

As recent as Feb 2015:

In the last few months, Cloanto started distributing Amiga System Software - the publisher traditionally refers to it as "Workbench" instead of "AmigaOS" - on CF cards, Floppy Disks and as a downloadable Workbench Disk Image Pack. Approached by Amiga-News, Cloanto's Michael Battilana confirmed that the company owns the copyrights for all works created by the Commodore/Amiga companies up to 1993.

Seeing that those guys are actually doing something with it, it seems unlikely they might want to sell.

As long as they are doing something with it, I guess that's all that matters.
Sorry if this was a blindingly obvious thing, probably should have Googled it
a bit harder.

You know, after watching the "Deathbed Vigil" that Dave Haynie made, I can't help but think that there was either criminal negligence or gross incompetence (or both) on the part of Commodore management.
