Private Messages remain in "outbox" and don't get sent

Hi guys, I hope this is the right sub-forum for general questions about forum tech issues.

I tried to send 2 private messages to a user, but they remain stuck in the "outbox" folder and never move to the "sent" folder, thus they never get sent.

1) Why?
2) What should I do to kick them towards the user?
3) How to prevent reoccurrences?

Yeah I was puzzled by this as well in the past. Messages still in your outbox are those that the recipient hasn't read yet. Not the most intuitive notation, I agree, but hey this way you've got a "read" receipt.
