I've picked up a few old 486 parts and have been trying to get them functioning.

The primary issue is this Chaintech 4ULD motherboard.

I bought a complete PC, with the board, an Evergreen 586 chip, case, psu etc.

The battery has leaked a bit and theres a small amount of corrosion on the board, but it doesnt look bad. I've removed the battery completely now.

Currently i've got the board on the test bench, with a standard Intel 486DX2 CPU, 2x 16MB FPM RAM and a Trident TVGA9000A ISA video card.

Upon applying power, i just get 1 long beep, which repeats over and over.

I've removed the video card, and the ram, both individually and together, and the beep code remains the same.

I've swapped the ram for known good stuff from another PC, and no change.

I dont have another video card to try, but i will try this ISA card in another board later

As an additional point, i'm using an ATX PSU for testing, which does not have a -5v rail. I dont know if that is a problem?

Any ideas?

definitely start with cleaning the corrosion then you may need to repair if anything has been eaten away with the acid, the atx psu is fine no issues there testing for post

Dug out my LS486E, and swapped everything into it.

First off it gave a one long, three short beep code (or maybe 1 long, 2 short, 1 short).

Tried a PCI video card instead of the Trident, and it POSTed.

Swapped the Trident back in, and its also now working fine.

So that suggests all the components themselves are good...

Treeman: i've washed the board down with IPA and had a good close look at it. Theres a few green legs on some thru hole parts near the battery but overall it doesnt look too bad. Is there a preferred method to clean up the green mess?
