When I try to run DOSBox on Windows (using the Windows binaries), it crashes saying:
CONFIG:Loading settings from config file dosbox.conf
MIDI:Opened device:win32
Exit to error: Failed to create a rendering output

I tried reinstalling, changing settings, nothing worked. Couldn't find the problem in this forum, and the troubleshooting parts of the wiki and README seem to be really lacking too.

hmm you could try setting the output to overlay in dosbox.conf

But the error you have is really special and it would help if you provided some more information about your system. Especially about your graphics card.

Oh thanks! It worked 😁

And for the sake of fixing the problem for future versions:

GeForce2 MX
Pentium 4 1.8GHz
512 RAM
ASUS P4B266

Btw, what's the diffrence between the two output modes, and what does it mean that I changed to Overlay, how will it affect my gameplay?

In general it will be faster. but not all people like it as it tends to stay on top of your windows

I hate to bring up old news, but I've encountered the same problem, but overlaying didn't help.

I unfortunatly have an onbaord video card on an HP Pavilion.

Try the other modes listed in dosbox.conf: surface, overlay, opengl, openglnb, ddraw

Make sure you're using the latest video card drivers and DirectX version available for your card and version of Windows.
