I would like to show my newest retro build PC.
The Goal is to build a Windows XP machine based on fastest AGP GPU and 939 CPU .
So ok a HD3850 + a 939 Athlon 64 FX60.
I also like to mix new components with old stuff of the timeline.
Another goal was to keep the system silent with some nice cable managment.
So after some research i choose the follow components:

Case: Phanteks Eclipse P300 with insulation
Board: Asus P8V DELUXE Rev 2.0 Sockel 939
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 FX60 @ 2,8GHz AIO Corsair H100i Platinum
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD3850 AGP @ 720/950 MHz Accelero Mono Plus
PSU: 550W OCZ
Audio: Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
RAM: 4x 512MB DDR PC3200 Corsair XMS
HDD: Samsung SSD 960 EVO 250GB (on promise raid controller)
OS: Windows XP Pro 32bit

First mod was to get the AIO on the Athlon. It was a really easy job at the end. All i have to do was using the intel clamps with some dremel action on the holes.
After that i removed the CPU bracket, but leave the back one for the screws of the AIO. The mounting was a bit to high so another dremel action 😀:

Tests show anything fit perfect, CPU 30-50° max. I also installed a fan control because asus quite is pain in the ass.. So i slowed down the Fans near silent.

Next step was to change the front USB (USB 3.0 -> 2.0)

The HD3850 Fan is fancy one. Sometimes he is complete off and than with load 100% on, there is nothing between.
So i decide to switch the cooler. I found a really nice one from Arctic. It still supports the HD3850 what is pretty nice for a new cooler.

I used the voltage connector from the old cooler for the new one. Works also without problems.
So for now i pretty happy with the build. I keep the eyes open for the FX-57.

Looks really nice and off to a grate start.

What about an fx x2 chip with a core disabled?
A often over looked mod when water cooling, try a fan spacer on the rad. It will increase air flow over the rad. Witch might be worth trying if your shooting for silent operation.

Its really silent and nothing goes over 50° on load so im happy.
I think X2 FX are only AM2 ?

FX-60 is socket 939 dual core but super rare and expensive

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

Ok thanks, i found a FX60 for a good price (120€). Will see if i can run it with 2,8GHz.

You are welcome! From old reviews it looks like 2.8ghz is the max with a stock cooler, but since AMD still uses the same mounting system you can buy a nice after market cooler for am3/4 and probably clock it higher.

Awesome build and good call on the HD3850 cooling. We don't need those to become extremely rare. I think it's kinda bottlenecked on 939 though...

He uses an AIO watercooler, so that's not an issue. Getting a cooler, that is.

It is but i loved to build 939 with fastest CPU and AGP GPU. I also OCed the Hd3850 with base voltage to 720/940 works perfect. The cooler works like a charme.

true, you found many coller starting from AM2 but 939 it can be difficult. But im really happy with the AIO solution. Hope this helps some guys want to build a 939 system. Its a bit expensive option but worth i think!
I will get the FX60 on friday than i oc to 2,8GHz and let you guys know the temps.

you mean the FX60 +200Hz sucks so much? I dont oc to limit its just 24/7 with good cooling. But i have no exp with 939 oc.

Well not quite. But that board has no heat sink on the VRM mosfet's to begin with so adding some cooling there would not be a bad idea.

You mean the parts near the CPU spools? I marked it red in the picture. I can place there some stones left from the gpu cooler

Yes those. I can't see them getting too hot being a 3 phase VRM, but it would not hurt to add some extra cooling. The north bridge may get hotter if your OCing by FSB. However with an FX chip you have the option of overclocking via clock multiplier witch would not add much if any heat to the north bridge.

Yep, those are exactly what he means.
Whoops, beat me to it. Also, wouldn't they still need more cooling, considering they would have to supply more current?

that was the plan going over the Multi and add some voltage. I dont a fan of FSB OC. Ok thanks i will give that part some stones. Im happy when the fx60 runs two cores on FX57 speed 😀
What you guys think about upgrade 2GB Ram to 4GB for XP 32bit? Make it any sence? Maybe bad for OC? The DDR RAMs are getting pretty expensive ^^

Id stick to 2 sticks of ram, less of a load on the CPU memory controller, less ram should also be less of a load too. The less load the better OC, at lest on paper that is.
But if you need more then 2gb of ram go for it.

its just for gaming, i got on the limits (well with a 4600+ at the mom 30-45fps) with Mass Effect or Tomb Raider Underground or Dark Messiah of M&M they take on load something around 1gig. OK so 2x 1GB fast RAM will be better. I will see how the 4x 512MB Corsair XMS handle the oc.
Pretty sure the nvidia SLI 939 board with a 8800 Ultra sli will go better but i want good old AGP! 😀

8800 ultra SLI would be held back by a Athlon 64 setup. But yeah it would be much faster. I do get wanting to stick with AGP however. PCIe does make alot of things simpler but oddly I too tend to stick with AGP.
