Specifically what games are you wanting to play?

I probably wouldn't use either depending on if you want to play 3d accelerated games or not.

And yes, there are lists like that. 3D Accelerated Games List (Proprietary APIs - No 3DFX/Direct3D) is one list
Note that in the very early days of 3D acceleration there were some competing graphics card makers and competing APIs and some cards got scarce little support and quickly lost the 'format war'.
