On my Win98 build the PCI realtek 10/100/1000 will only negotiate fast ethernet not gigabit ethernet. It's a cat 6a patch cable going into a patch panel/switch that has comfortably does gigabit for everywhere else.

I don't actually need gigabit on a win98 machine, so it may well be not worth too much bothering about.

Are there any simple steps to fixing this, or is it just too ambitious for win98?

Does this card negotiate Gigabit with anyone else? Or in a different OS?

I've not tried it in a different OS. It's a fairly generic card though based on a RealTek RTL8169 chipset.

Eventually it'll be tried on this machine in XP, but it'll be some time before I install XP. I don't have another machine I could try it in.

The card in my FM1 system was bought as a gigabit card, but with Windows 10's drivers it also only gives 100 Mb. Doesn't bother me too much as it is good enough for most things, but I might take it out to check what chip it uses and find better drivers when I retire it from daily use (which will be soon, as I need to get my Skylake system back into daily use). So it might just be the wrong drivers, same as I expect with my card.

I have checked and these are the latest drivers I can find for the card. It's not a big deal though, it's only for transferring files in the network and 100megabits is plenty fast for that. It was just in case there was a known go-to fix for it.

Ok, The big difference between 100Mb and 1000Mb is that the former uses 2 pairs of wires and the latter 4 pairs. Use a cable tester to ensure your cables are good. Do a visual check on the switch and ethernet card pins, make sure none are bent, corroded or squashed. See if another device connects at 1Gb on that cable and port. See if another switch connects at Gb.

Have you tried forcing it to 1gig in the drivers?
