Hi so I have a windows 98 machine that I bought so that I could play my late 90s early 2000s games on at least original hardware and the system that I had purchased came with a Geforce4 MX 420...

I am looking to replace it as it struggles to run games even at medium to low settings on games like

Half-Life
Soldier of Fortune II
Civ 3

I was a young kid when these games came out so I despite being around for these games releases I don't know much about the graphics cards from back then but ideally I'd want to be able to play games from the years
1997-2001/2 ish. I'd also like to keep it in the Nvidia family as I at least know a little more about them then I do ATI/AMD.

EDIT - Oh and my CPU is a Pentium III 933mhz and I have 256 mb of ram in the system... I think my graphics card is AGP?

GeForce FX5900Ultra is the best non-Glide GPU for Win98, and it runs things like nGlide just fine as well. However it is limited to pre-DX9 games, but DX9 is more of a WinXP thing anyway.

Alright cool I will def look into that and on the DX thing yeah I don't think I'll be playing any DX 9 games anyhow so should be good there!

Obviously I know it's older so it won't be "as" good but would the 4200 ti be pretty good? I forgot to mention I'm not exactly looking to spend over $100 on it so that's my fault but I do see a few 4200 ti's going for around $70 to $80 on Ebay.

The specs say it is more than twice as good as the MXC420. 4 pixel shaders, to the 420's 2. 2 texture shaders. 128-bit memory bandwidth. Cab't comment on the performance in real terms, only thay everything is at least double the 420.

Constantly being worked on. Feel free to message me with any corrections or details of cards you would like me to research and add.

Went ahead and purchased a MSI 4200 ti 128 mb off of Ebay! looks to be a solid replacement for the mx 420 since the 420 is apparently a glorified Geforce2...
