Hello all, I have an ESS Audiodrive es1868f ISA card, it is a pnp device with an additional ide connector that I don't think can be disabled. Looking at the card it has a missing port on the I/O shield labeled 3D, the pcb has a 10pin header for the 3-D audio but I'm not sure if this card was designed to use the 3d audio. The pcb has many unpopulated smd components and the silkscreen is labeled most of them as other ESS chips. Any info on this card? I haven't seen another one around like this. I have the card installed and I'm thinking about getting a dreamblaster x2 to get a bit better sound out of my machine.

That line of searching leads to some dead amazon & ebay listings:

Seems fairly typical of generic cards that came in various configs. The 3D hole on the IO plate is the most intriguing part, perhaps someone will have an answer for that. At the end of the day though, it doesn't really matter what it is. Assuming it's working fine then you have a sweet ES1868 card and that's that. Perhaps Unisound can help with IDE options if the usual ESS drivers aren't helping?

If you're considering a wavetable board, consider the E-Wave too. It's not released yet - I'm waiting for one to pair with my ESS card. It only feels right. E-Wave : an ESS based waveblaster card

Windows 98se installs the built in pnp driver and it's showing as a wdm driver, are there any vxd drivers for this card. I downloaded a few drivers labeled for the es1868f but none of them install correctly, I do have the card working in ms_dos mode as well as dos box in windows, I'm using 2 sound cards. An audigy 2zs with no sb emulation and vxd drivers, and this ess 1868f, both running through an external hardware mixer, audigy 2zs is set to my preferred card in windows. Testing out some games and I ran the setup from descent and tried the auto config and it found the card as an ess 488/688 audiodrive and sb pro/16 pas 16 (opl3) on port 388, music and sound effects are working with these settings.

EDIT - removed wrong link.

You have to manually update the drivers through Device Manager.

Try these.

You have to manually update the drivers through Device Manager.

Just tried to install these and windows refuses to install them. I pointed to the directory and windows says I'm already using the best driver then I chose install one of the other drivers and it points to c:\\windows\inf\essoem~1.inf in the list of available drivers.

I remember this happening to me as well. IIRC, you have to manually select the driver during that process.

Try this: in Device Manager, right-click on the ESS device > Properties > Driver > Update Driver > Next > Display a list of drivers in a specific location > Have Disk > Browse > point it to the folder where the drivers are unpacked. It should then pick up the relevant .inf file and allow you to select the correct driver. There are two ESS devices under Device Manager and you need to do this for both.

Its giving me 2 options from those drivers, es1938 dos emulation and es1938 pci audio drive, I think these drivers are for later model ess soundcards like the solo-1, I don't think these are the drivers I need .

My bad, I accidentally linked the Solo-1 drivers.

I'm attaching the ones that I use for my 1868F. These should work with the method described in my previous post.

Okay those drivers worked, vxd version dated 1996 and the wdm was dated 1997, dos sound still works, thanks for sharing those, I'm uploading them to my server. Can't wait to get a dream blaster x2 for this card now
