If you're one of the few people still using a PC with an x86 processor more than 15 years old, here's another reason to upgrade: the devices will not work with future Chrome releases, starting with version 89 of the world's most popular browser. TechSpot reports:
The Chromium development team announced that CPUs older than the Intel Core 2 Duo and AMD Athlon 64 would not work with Chrome 89 and future versions as they do not meet the new minimum instruction set requirement of SSE3 (Supplemental Streaming SIMD Extensions 3) support. So, if you are still sporting an Intel Atom or Celeron M CPU, you'll soon be counting Chrome as one of the many programs that are incompatible with your potato-like rig. The devices will no longer attempt to install the browser, while running it will result in the software crashing. It's noted that the change only affects Windows as Chrome OS, Android and, Mac already require SSE3 support.

Wonder how quickly the CEF based game launchers (those that still have 32bit available anyway) will pick this up. Crack "your" games peoples.

"potato-like rig." .... one person's potato-like rig is another's vintage treasure!

anyway i wouldn't use Chrome, or edge or firefox, on a 15 year old / pre core duo PC for browsing the internet, I never mind things like this moving on - 15 years is actually ok, some tech move on leaving viable hardware behind too soon.

there are lighter options for old pcs if still wanting to browse the net anyway

regarding games - yes, many are falling into the abyss all the time 🙁

My backup server for many years was a twin Tualatin rig which got retired when Chrome began requiring SSE2. It was replaced by a twin Irwindale Xeon machine. This supports SSE3 so is still good for a while yet.

Is this too much voodoo?

my poor Northwood... oh well, there is Firefox!

I was made aware of this requirement change a few weeks ago by accident, I was using a LGA 771 Xeon on a 775 motherboard without the proper microcode and because of that windows didn't detect SSE3 support and Chrome gave me the warning!
(I added the microcode and now it's all good... for now)

Mah. There are other web browsers. I can't recall ever using chrome.

Of course, as always, I'm open to correction...😉
