VOGONS

Hey guys,

I'm sure these particular sound cards have been discussed a lot however I can't seem to find any resolutions. As I've mentioned in previous posts, I purchased an Ensoniq AudioPCI 1370 from ebay. (a 1997 card with Ensoniq logo on the chip). I used the "e64w9xup" driver from VOGONS library (thanks!) for windows 98se and it worked flawlessly, as well as the legacy driver for some DOS games in Windows 98. For DOS I tried the AUDIOPCI DOS drivers from VOGONS library, however they were for the 1371-72 and were not compatible with my card as my card was not detected in pure DOS when using these drivers. I did however, download the DOS drivers for this card from another post by user: Kamerat who posted info about the win 3.xx driver and DOS driver a few years ago. These drivers did load properly. The APconfig program that came with the drivers displays all the irq's and DMA settings, and works. However here is my problem now.

When I run "aptest" I get an error saying "DMA test failed on DMA channel 1". If I try it again, it then says "audiopci legacy device was not detected". If I change the DMA to 3 in sndscape.ini, autoexec.bat etc; I get the same error. Changing BIOS settings to Legacy ISA has no effect.

Here is the strange thing though. If I play Doom, it works. If I select general midi or sound blaster for music and sound blaster for sound effects, it works.
It also works in windows with some DOS games like Monkey Island.

It must have something to do with having to emulate itself in a DOS environment, but I can't seem to figure this out. Any input or assistance would be much appreciated. Thank you.

What motherboard are you using?

Epox EP-61BXA-M Mobo with Pentium III 600MHz CPU and 512MB RAM. It has an intel chipset 440bx. I found the original win 95 drivers for this card which came with DOS drivers as well. However, I've come to the conclusion that it's just not going to work and I think I'm going to try and find an OPL3 ISA card on ebay. If not I'll buy the resound OPL3 card and find a decent ISA soundblaster clone.

Do you know if I can use regular computer speakers in that Resound card? It says you need an amplifier because it uses a line-level audio signal. But if my speakers have a volume knob is that good enough?

I ended up going on ebay and finding a Sound Blaster Vibra 16S Creative Labs ISA 16 CT2800 with a Yamaha OPL YMF262 chip on it. This should solve my problems and meet my want for a card with an OPL chip.
