Hi, i'm having some problems installing windows 95 on my 386 machine, the setup process locks after I choose the install folder (defaults to c:\windows).
i've tried with safe mode install, and with some command line arguments to no avail.
In windows 3.11 it works just fine and even i can browse the web slowly but windows 95 is a no go.
also, using packet drivers in dos doesn't work, using mtcp and the packet driver from Crynwr makes both ftp and ftpsrv to lock the machine, while in my other 386-sx25 and in my 286-20 they just work fine

specs:
motherboard pcchips m326 V5.4
processor Intel RapidCAD w/FPU in the socket (33 and 40mhz, the problem is there in both speeds)
4mb simm30
trident 8900d 1mb w/all the jumpers set to the fastest configuration possible
audician 32 plus
nic 3com etherlink III
MS-DOS 5.0 with Windows for Workgroups 3.11
HDD Seagate 1.6GB (without overlay or any software, the bios autodetects just fine its capacity)

Try and make 1st partition less than 512MB.

Windows 95 on 4MB of memory runs pretty bad - 8MB is minimum and installed on CF card.

Try and get some other VGA card that has Windows acceleration support - CL 542X/543X, S3 80X, Tseng W32...

I think the same. 16MB is not too much for Win95, either.
I would even say that 32MB or more are required to make Win95 not swap to disk constantly.
4MB are the bare minimum, honestly. It's barely enough for Win95, let alone applications.
For WfW 3.11, with enabled networking/sharing etc, 16MB and up are recommended.
For vanilla Windows 3. 1x, 4MB and up are okay.

Edit: My family's PC in the mid-90s was a 386DX40 with 16MB RAM.
And it ran Win95 RTM. Even with 16MB, swapping still happened a lot.
