So, this has turned up surprisingly few hits except rather fruitless posts on a german gaming forum.

I ordered a UK CD version of Sam n Max and Day of the Tentacle on a single disc. Neither comes with any sort sound configuration utility. They both run just fine with a form of music and sound effects. But I want to get them to use the general midi emulation on my AWE64. I read the CD version of Day of the Tentacle is supposed to have dott.exe, which this doesn't. Luckily tentacle.exe responds to the g,s and r commands and sounds a lot better with general midi. I had no such luck with samnmax.exe, and when I try, it says the only valid parameters are k,m and j to toggle assorted controls.

The readme tells me to run sam.bat, and it'll take me a sound configuration utility. This does not happen. This is the bat file.

@if exist c:\samnmax.cd\setmuse.ini goto play
@md c:\samnmax.cd
@copy digmuse.exe c:\samnmax.cd
@digmuse c:\samnmax.cd digmuse.exe c:\samnmax.cd\imuse.ini ?
@samuse c:\samnmax.cd\imuse.ini c:\samnmax.cd\setmuse.ini
:play
@samnmax

Now I'm no expert in batch files, but I'm assuming the @ characters just keep things from printing to the screen. Conspicuously absent from the batch file is setmuse.exe which I read is supposed to be present. In it's place are references to digmuse.exe and samuse.exe, the operation of which is a total mystery to me. As well as the broader internet it seems. I see no way to compel them to set general midi. It's definitely using adlib, as music still plays even if aweutil /em:gm hasn't been loaded.

Looking at the ini files, they have some text referencing assorted sound files I presume, but also a lot of hex data in the gaps. Doesn't look human readable or editable. Any ideas? Or a place I could just get the setmuse.exe file I'm allegedly supposed to have?
