My neighbor game me a Dell Poweredge 2600. (2) Xeon 2.8ghz socket 604 cpu's, 12gb ram, 6 146gb scsi drives arranged in some RAID configuration. 2 redundant power supplies. It's interesting to me because you can natively run 32 bit s/w, no muss no fuss. There are 64 bit cpu's available for it's motherboard, but you may as well get something way newer if you need a 64 bit system. It has Windows Server 2003 installed.
Ok, admittedly pretty boring for a gamer. No AGP (not sure it even has pci slots, but rather 5 or 6 pci-x iinm). Some sort of Rage XL graphics. Not sure if the extra speed, and dual cpu's, makes up for any of that or to what extent. And you can get somewhat faster 32 bit cpu's for this box, 3.2ghz. But would this server, maximally configured, be amongst the most powerful 32 bit boxes available? AFAICT there is no Pentium 4 or Athlong XP... that could keep up. Assuming the application running takes advantage of both cpu's. O/w does it really not make a difference one way or the other.
I was happy to see it sports a floppy drive (3 1/2"). No optical but rather a tape drive in it's place. Wonder if it could support a 5 1/4" floppy drive.
