3C509B-C not recognized by WFW 3.11

I have a Gateway 2000 P5-60 computer (hence my username) and am trying to set up networking on it. I recently purchased a 3COM Etherlink III 3C509B-C ISA networking card for it but it is not being auto-detected by WFW. I'm new to using WFW and am not sure if I need a specific driver for it or if there is some sort of resource conflict occurring. The only other card plugged into the motherboard is the OEM PCI video card. I don't think the card is dead because the green activity light comes on. Any ideas what the issue could be?

In the olden days you had to tell the graphical environment/OS that the hardware is there by loading things called drivers.......

If you want tcp/ip network connectivity on the system you'll need to install that from tcp32b.exe which is easy to get hold of.

There's a glitch in the matrix.

Apparently 32-bit is dead and nobody likes P4s.
Of course, as always, I'm open to correction...😉

I know what drivers are, but I remember seeing that certain network cards are autodetected by WFW 3.11. I guess this isn't one of them.
I can't seem to find the specific driver for this card (it's the combo model with the BNC and RJ45 connectors). The only ones I can find are the for TPO version.

There's no autodetection going on with WfW3.x, you have to manually tell what card to install in the drivers conf.

Chances are it is configured in PnP mode and Wfw3.x's driver may not work in that case and you'll have to use the 3com's conf util to switch the card out of PnP mode.

Ha. This card may be funny when the card is in EISA config mode.
Do not try this at home.

I tried running the 3c0m config program but it could not find the card. I'm starting to think the card could be bad

Yes, WFW 3.11 should auto-detect the card when you setup networking.
But if it can’t even see the card with the 3com config utility then something is wrong with the card or your bios settings ?
Check bios setting on ISA slots. Make sure they are setup to use the right IRQs.
And check your operating system preference setting in bios.
Check for conflicting IRQs.
You should also first configure the card using the 3com configuration utility. Setup the connection types and run the diagnostic test.
And check your connections.

Then run the WFW3.11 network setup once you get this all straightened out.
