I have fought this for about 3 weeks and finally figured it out so wanted to post here to help others. Ok first you need the drivers from phil's computer lab https://www.philscomputerlab.com/sound-blaster-awe-32.html, download sbbasics.exe and ctcmbbs.exe. I ran these in their own directories and then did the install, sbbasics first then ctcm next. I ran ctcm to check the configuration and it setup my config.sys and autoexec.bat. I then ran ctcu, you must rem out the line in the autoexec.bat for share.exe if you have one, choose sound blaster pnp and then ide and resources, then reconfigure until you are back at the main screen, then exit. once these are done, reboot your machine and it will say that a change to the pnp I think in config.sys has been made you must reboot. reboot again and it should show your sound card and cd-rom as active. This is the steps I took to get it done.
Hope this helps someone. again the only card I have worked with this is the ct3980, which has an ide atapi compliant port, I am actually running a dvd-rom/cdr cd-rom (reads cd-roms, cd-r's).
