Many of us have done it. Plugging a pci-e connector into the mothefboard (actually takes 2 pci-e connectors if the mobo has an 8 pin connector). It's been a while, but I did this, briefly, and kind of sort of want to sell the mobo now. It still works fine afaict. It's a pricey item, perhaps upwatrds of 400$. Is it dishonest of me to call it open box (it's virtually unused). It just occurred to me, duh, I could just explain the situation in the listing. I could also just run it for 10 hours (in a non mining capacity, it's a mining board). What would you do?

you just shorted out your power supply, which should have shut off immediately or not even turned on anyways so as long as there's nothing burned it shouod be fine.

How does one manage to do that, as the keying is designed to prevent that, AFAIU ? Not judging, just trying to understand .

The corner cut plug parts fit in the square holes just fine... it's the square plug bits that don't fit in the corner cut ones. .... unless you carve at them a bit with an Xacto... and push hard... 🤣 ... it can happen though that a shell is a bit too flexible and the plug is a bit too worn and you can shove the two together with about the same force as two new stiff ones.

Spoiler

In case that made you wonder, I have made PCIe connectors out of excess cheapie PSU plugs a few times... or redid unstandard to ATX12V and stuff like that.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

I plugged the 20pin ATX of a Bestec PSU in backwards to a BX board on a hot sweaty day.

My dad plugged the main power cord upside down into a PSU frying everything but the HDD. (I dont understand how this was physically possible)
