This PC started life in 1999 as a office PC for event management company specialising in the law field based in Sydney.
Sometime around 2005 it "retired" from memory just about everyone else had moved up to WinXP and it simply more economical to replace rather then upgrade.
I remember taking it home as it kind of matched my own Gateway P2 400 which was still my daily driver at the time and even became my primary PC for a short while when said P2 seriously needed a rebuild but with my trip the UK very close it was simply easier to leave that as is and wipe the yet unused Celeron for the last few months.

Both Gateways

Specs were
M/B: Intel "Freeman" S370 BX Motherboard P/N 4000440
CPU: Celeron 400
RAM: 256MB
Graphics : Onboard ATI Rage 128VR
Audio: Onboard SB PCI64
HDD: 2GB
FDD and IDE CD-ROM
Gateway branded PCI Modem which I doubt has ever been used.

For the last 16 years it's been living somewhat unloved in my parents garage as I'm back in the country for 2 months thought I'd see how it's holding up.

Time hasn't been kind and the below has died over the years.
1 of the sticks 128MB sticks of RAM which I upgraded back in the mid 2000's.
The 2GB HDD isn't original to the system either and can't remember where it came from so may have been on the way out already.
FDD and CD drive would have been original, Floppy I'd replace with a Gotek so don't care, CD drive is a shame but fair enough.
And rust, this is the bottom of the other tower but both were about the same. The garage is attached to the house but with no heating/cooling and suspect has spent time on the cement floor.

As I'm not permanently over I'm not spending money on this yet. I've grabbed a 128MBstick from the P2 giving me the full 256MB again.
I "borrowed" a CD drive from a P4 based Compaq D510 also in storage here"
I tried a 160GB HDD but it didn't work so went with my next biggest IDE drive... 10GB 🙁
NIB Intel 100MB NIC, no idea what happened to the NIC originally in this PC as it was part of a SBS 2003 network so definitely had one.
Luckily I had updated the BIOS to the final version back in the 2000's as its kind of tricky finding Gateway BIOS updates these days.
The bottom was sanded back and spray painted with silver painted, not the best job but you can't see it and doesn't make a mess on the furniture.

For the past month I have been pleasantly surprised with its performance, I also got the other tower working (will do another post about that) and played network games of C&C2, RA2, AOE2, Warcraft 2, Need for Speed 3 and Porsche.

Long term plan is we should be moving back to Australia in the next 12 months. when this will get a bit more money spent on it. I'm somewhat limited with only 4 PCI slots I'm limited with options.
however I was surprised how well the Rage performed in NFS Porsche so think it'll do plus allows me to mess around with ATI CIF API.

Same with the onboard sound. I know the Sb 64PCI is a budget card but it gives me dos sound on a pure PCI rig and it'll never be my primary rig for Win9x

Really that just leaves CPU, but here is a question as I'm not familiar with early S370 motherboards, anyone know what would the fastest CPU this motherboard would support? I can't find much info on the "Gateway essential" range at all.
