It's probably a stupid question, but i always wondering why this shape of card was so popular.
I saw a lot of ATI rage cards, i740, some Matrox and Nvidia TNT with this shape.
Why this "notch" ? Any thoughts ?

That's an NLX convertible card. You can replace the metal ATX bracket with an NLX style bracket and use it in one of the many Compaq Deskpros, IBM PC300s, and Gateway business machines that used the NLX formfactor. It was a fairly common formfactor for business desktops back in the late 90s.
