I get this error in dosbox console after running dsavant.exe:
Exit to error: CPU:GRP5:Illegal Call 7
HW is a DELL OptiPlex GX100 with an i810 VGA.
Any clues?

That's weird. Wizardry 7 works under DOSBox. What version of DOSBox are you using?
It's possible that you have a bad version of Wiz7 or DOSBox...
Wizardry 7 works in DOSBOX since I do not remember when (long time ago). One idea: do not use Pentium patch, I think that it used to cause problems...

Ok, i've made it somewhat further. The initial screen (closed book) loads, but then DOSBOX or the game seemingly hangs.
DOSBOX v0.63, Wizardry 7 CD-image verrsion from abandonia. (sorry, links to abandonware sites are against the rules -- HunterZ)
Did you follow the instructions linked on the game download page? The link points here: http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2251
I think it's extremely odd that it comes as a CD image, as it's a floppy game. Seems like they're making it harder than it needs to be to run the game.
Also if that distro contains VINSTALL.EXE, try using that to reconfigure sound, video, and memory options and then save with "config only"

There were both floppy and CD versions of Wizardry 7... Though I am not sure about differences between these versions.

As far as I know there was only a floppy version unless you're talking about Wizardry Gold, but Wiz:Gold is a Windows-only application.

No. There was a CD ROM version of Wizardry 7 (not Gold). I have it. It reports itself as CD ROM version. Though I guess that it was done mainly in order to get rid of floppies, there are probably no other improvements (I have also abandonware version which is made from the CD ROM version, installed by this BAT).:
MD C:\WIZ-CD
MD C:\WIZ-CD\7
COPY PCFILE.DBS C:\WIZ-CD\7\*.*>NUL
COPY SCENARIO.HDR C:\WIZ-CD\7\*.*>NUL
VINSTALL.EXE

OK, my problem got solved. The Wiz7 CD version mirek posted aboutworked if i mashed the ESC button during the intro sequence. Otherwize it'd freeze. No clue why. 😀 Enjoying the game at work atm.
Thanks for all the fish!
