Hello - I haven't been on here in quite some time (don't know if anyone remembers me or not)
Anyway, I have a question. It seems like the only drives you can get now are SATA. So Is tarted looking at SATA cards. First, it seems like a lot are PCI-express (which I cannot use - we are talking about an older system).
Yet every one I have looked at is a RAID controller. So the question is, can one of those can be used as a "regular" disk controller with one drive, or two separate drives? I went so far as to look up the manual for one, doesn't spell it out, so I am guessing no.

Silicon Image SIL3512 - it`s HBA (host based controller, i.e. no hardware offloading command and operation, just driver side).
If at pcb populated flash chip, then It`s have 2 firmware - for RAID and for SATA_link.
From such a controller you can boot, but still need driver

The Promise SATA300 TX2 Plus (and TX4) are also widely available on eBay and the drivers and firmwares are available on the Promise website under legacy products (https://www.promise.com/Support/DownloadCenter). I'm using them since forever and never had any issues with them. You will also see some marked as "Maxtor", they were sold in "SATA upgrade kits" but are absolutely standard except the marking.

You just need a diskette with the drivers when you install Win 2k/XP, press F6 at setup start to load them as usual.

Searching anything Nexgen, PM me if you have one. Also ATI Rage 128 PCI cards.
