Hi guys, just wanted to announce my voltage regulator module for Socket 5/7 mainboards with accordant Intel VRM header. In case you always wanted to convince a slow first generation Pentium mainboard to dance with an AMD K6-2/400. Yep, followed these videos and it's great to see the end product.

Your videos are very educational for someone like me who just started dabbling in retro hardware mods and repair. They are always fun to watch as well.

Thank you very much! Glad, that you guys like this project and the videos. Unfortunately I don't sell anything, since it is complicated to sell such stuff from Germany, sorry. However, I'm quite sure, that sooner or later someone will build and sell those parts, usually very overpriced, but it is as it is 😉 If you want it as cheap as possible, try to build it on your own. I always tend to design my projects in a way, so they can be easily soldered by hand. Also, may be here in the forum somebody can organize and build a bunch of those modules.

I don't want to give any commercial here, but just because you ask, if someone wants to support my channel, beside Patreon, there is also paypal link in the channel description and "thank you" buttons under the videos. If you want, you can use that, but please don't feel, that you need to, it's already a big reward, if I know that I could give you some fun 😉

I'm looking forward to the final revision of this VRM adaptor. It provides a nice alternative to the overpriced, and increasingly rare, socket5/7 upgrade adaptors (Kingston, Evergreen Spectra, etc).

Will you be providing a BOM specifying normally in-stock Mouser part numbers? I saw a general guide for part specs in the docs section, which is certainly helpful, but an exact BOM for the final revision I think would be helpful for most hobbyists. I realise you aren't at the final revision yet.

I also have an Asus P/I-P55TP4XEG I'd like to test your VRM on, but I'm even more anxious to test it on a socket 5 board I have, the Asus PCI/I-P54TP4. That board I tried tirelessly [and unsuccessfully] to upgrade to PB Burst SRAM, Anyone own an Asus PCI/I-P54TP4 with pipeline burst SRAM? Planning to mod direct-mapped SRAM to pipelineburst

Do you have any socket 5 boards to test the VRM on?

Good job 😀 the videos were quite entertaining. Suggest testing the mainboard with on motherboard cache disabled btw.

Excellent project! Thoroughly enjoyed all the parts and eventually tried to build few of your VRM's for myself. It so happened that I have a Digital Equipment Corporation Venturis FX5150s which I love to tinker with and it has a VRM connector. I had an urge to upgrade it with an MMX CPU for a while now! Thank you for enabling that to happen! Happy to report that the module works beautifully!

P.S.
Would be nice to have a cheap and simple/basic revision of the module that could power just Intel/Cyrix MMX CPU, something like your initial module. People like me, with limited skills would be unlikely to push an early board to accept an AMD K6, while having lower entry point both price and skill wise could benefit more people. Especially those who just want to throw an MMX and move on.

P.P.S.
Actually I have built 5 modules, but I still have to make or find those darn inductors for the other four and then obviously test them. However, I might be open to sell the excess with a slight overprice and recoup the cost 😉

Hey all, I got this vrm from another member, they assembled it and tested it before giving it to me.

I have so far only tested it with over current protection present.

It trips it every time in two different motherboards so far.

Without vrm installed the system functions fine.

Any ideas? Dare I try without the protection? Are the capacitors of the unit too large? Is that why?

Yeah. It does seem to be the caps. The vrm works with a straight adapter. And I noted the problem with a recapped board I have. Seems low resistance/higher value modern caps can cause issues.

I was able to get the recapped board to boot by pressing the power up multiple times on the over current device to precharge the caps

I wonder if delaying the power good signal's assertion might be helpful as a workaround.

I've been slacking on this, easy to put it off because I've never used gerber files to order a PCB. And now I don't have to because someone is now selling the PCBs on Ebay. Of course I'll still have to order the components and do the soldering once I get them, but it's step in the right direction. One step closer to having a K6-3+ @ 400 MHz on my PCChips M507.

Published new revision with a lot of significant improvements. Revision 0.6 delivers better voltage stability, higher voltage range and support for single voltage CPUs beside dual voltage ones.

I've never seen a 430TX with a VRM header... 430VX -- yes, but rare. 430TX -- no.

Yeah, I also never saw such boards in person and I might be wrong about it, but I think I saw pictures of such OEM boards. Probably 430FX is the most common chipset which was used on boards with a VRM option, but there plenty 430VX, 430HX, SIS and VIA based boards too. Anyhow, the more feedback the better. Also this VRM can be used instead of the on board regulator on any board as a hanging setup.
