Hi, I'm new here and I don't know the first about programing 😀. Before I posted this I did a search on magic carpet and I couldn't find any posts that address this particular issue.

Okay the problem I'm having with magic carpet is that I can't get it to run passed the language and sound setup screen. After I pick everything the screen turns black and it stays that way. I am able to run the game without dosbox but its runs ridiculously fast I heard you could use dosbox to emulate the game and gain some control over the speed so I figured with this program I'd be able to slow the game down. I am able to play kings quest 6 with dosbox just fine but magic carpet doesn't run passed the setup screen. Also if I try to run hidden worlds it crashs as soon as I select the game I want to play.

My computer specs are as follows:

1.3ghz p4
384Rambus
geforce fx 5200 128ram

Any help would be most appreciated.

First, what version of DOSBox are you using?

If the game uses a DOS extender (such as DOS4GW) you might try using DOS32A in place of it (search the forum for info)

You might also try different core settings in your DOSBox config.

I've never played that game, but a lot of people have so maybe someone else here will have a more specific answer for you.

I'm using the latest one version 0.63. I believe its the latest one.

I believe it does. It has that file (DOS4GW) in the directory. As for DOS32A I did download that program. I was supposed to copy paste DOS32A? I don't know I'll search see what I turn up.

No idea what that means.

You should its an awesome game 😉. Thanks anyway.

PS
I'm a complete newbie. Please try to keep that in mind when giving me advice 😉.

You can find DOS32A on SourceForge. Since MC uses an external executable, it is possible to simply rename to DOS32A.EXE to DOS4GW.EXE and replace the one in the game directory.

No idea what that means.

Read the readme file and the comments in dosbox.conf. That said, I've found MC to work with the normal (default) core, if a little slow. It is also one of the games which runs absolutely brilliantly with the dynamic (experimental enhanced) core, as long as DOS32A is used. The game needs the extra speed boost the dynamic core provides. Especially with a relatively slow PC such as yours.

As for your problem, you have most likely selected Sound Blaster as the source for sound effects. MC has issues with SB emulation under DOSBox if it expects to see a real SB. To get around this, choose "Sound Blaster Compatible". By default, the DOSBox SB is at port 220, dma 1, irq 7. Be sure to specify those settings when the game asks for them.

Gah this is so annoying for some reason I can't delete DOS4GW or when I extract everything but that file I can't rename DOS32a. Something about being used by another program or person... Why can't I just play this lovely game 🙁. Was it not ment to be? 😢

Sounds more like Windows trouble than anything else. If you get this while you're sure the files aren't in you then perhaps you have a virus or maybe it's a virus scanner that is actually keeping the files open. Try booting Windows to safe mode and making the changes.

I went into safe mode I was able to delete DOS4GW but I could not rename dos32a. Used by another person or program. I also sent it to my friend and he wasn't able to change it either.

Good grief. You people have some seriously messed up systems if you can't even rename a simple executable.

I've renamed it for you. Download it from here. [Edit: download removed].

I really should take care of my computer...

Anywho, thanks for the program. I did find a work around before you posted that by typing dos32a carpet rather then just carpet. However it still won't run the game passed the setup screen. Even with the setup you posted. I've also tried it with no sound, still no go. One thing I tried was to hit esc right after i selected a langauge. It would take me to the game's main menu but as soon as I click on the globe it crashes back to dosbox only this time the text is all screwed up. I can't read a damn thing. I can still type but the characters aren't legible...

Is there anyway to run the game without dosbox at reasonable speeds?

Maybe you have a cracked version of the game (which has most of its CD intro ripped out, leaving only a black screen with [after a while] the sound that goes with it). I assure you that the original CD works just fine in DOSBox.

I don't know, the game did show the movie and I did get a chance to play the game without dosbox. But, you could be right. Oh well it wasn't ment to be 🙁.

Make sure you try with a recent CVS version as well. There's a link to CVS builds on the DOSBox site.

What is that? What does it do? What am I supposed to do with it?

I don't know if htis matters or not but when I run MC using dosbox. It won't show the 100% loaded thing. Rather it shows what its loading then goes straight to the setup screen.

Btw, if possible could you possibly point me to a site that has a working version of MC? I think i got mine from under-dog or whatever...

To get a working copy of MC, go here or here.

CVS is the versioning system that contains all the source code. This has the latest version of the DOSBox code in it. Since you indicated that you didn't know anything about programming, I pointed you to the link to CVS builds on the DOSBox site so you don't have to do the builds yourself. (A build is the process of converting the source code into an executable that you can actually run). Please do put some effort into simply reading a page or following a link if somebody suggests it to you.

I just got dosbox and I can't seem to get magic carpet to play sound even if I select 'soundblaster compatible' in the option screen. It seems to think there's a soundcard as it doesn't display the no-sound text on the intro sequence... I still don't hear anything.

dosbox settings:

soundblaster 16
port 220
irq 5
dma 3

Also, I have a soundblaster live card, but I don't think it has anything to do with the problem because Dark Forces plays sound just fine.

I don't really want to play this game without sound. The fire worms aren't half as scary if you can't hear them wail. 🙁

-edit-
it works now... I changed the dosbox settings to back default (a220 i7 d1) except I put sb1 for the soundblaster setting and then the same for magic carpet.

Meh, guess I shouldn't fiddle around with things unless I know what I'm doing.
