Hi, this ist my first post here.

So I built a Win98 SE machine consisting of the following:
Pentium III-S 1400
Asus Tusl2-c
Nvidia FX5900XT
512 MB RAM
120GB SSD
DVD drive

I Installed Windows 98se and chipset drivers and nothing else. Next was supposed to be the GPU driver, but it just leaves me with an error message saying: "Setup was unable to locate any Nvidia graphics chips..." and then canceling the installation.
I tried different driver versions, 45.23, 53.04 and some version on the original disc included in the graphicscard's box. Messing with all relevant Bios settings did nothing, Bios is on the latest version by the way, reinstalling Windows multiple times did nothing, using different SSDs and HDDs didn't work. Am I missing something? It's like Windows not seeing anything AGP. The card definitely works. During post, the first being displayed is "GeForce FX5900XT VGA BIOS...".

I tried to get this to work all day. I hope somebody can help. 😁

Have you tried manually pointing device manager to the inf?

Sometimes I find that the Nvidia setup application “detects” hardware by the presence of an already installed older driver, rather than hardware ID.

Once you manually get the driver installed (if it works) you can run the setup again to install the control panel.

For the initial test of your 5900XT, I recommend using 56.64 drivers as they fully support that particular model.

If it works fine, you can then try modifying 45.23 to include the relevant INF entries.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Core 2 Duo E8600 / Foxconn P35AX-S / X800 / Audigy2 ZS
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 980Ti / X-Fi Titanium

Yes!! 56.64 did the trick. Thank you.
I feel stupid now. I tried 45.23 first because it got so much praise all around. For my card it was just too old I guess...

You're welcome!

BTW, it is possible to manually install 45.23 on a 5900XT. The procedure is a bit convoluted though.

I'll look into that. As of now I'm fighting with my Soundblaster card. As I just found out I... Yeah... got an OEM version of the Audigy 2 Zs which you can't use retail drivers on. Damn.

According to another thread on here you can edit a specific file on the driver CD and it should work with OEM cards, but the instructions seem unclear to me. Well, off to buy another card and use onboard sound until then.

Yeah, with OEM Audigy cards, it's always a gamble whether retail drivers can be made to work or not.

I have a guide which is intended for retail Audigy 2 ZS cards. Curiously, a few people here even managed to get their OEM cards working with it, but the success rate with those variants hasn't been great. Still, it may be worth giving that a try before buying a new card. You might get lucky.

Thanks but I will save me the headache. I just ordered another Audigy 2 ZS with the right 350... serial no.

Again thanks for helping. Glad the GPU drivers are running now.

A shortcut I use to quickly determine the video driver for what I'm working on is to have a look at Phil's Computer Lab for Nividia drivers. The device ID for each driver is there, so you can quickly find the drivers that will work by doing a control F search.

After watching many YouTube videos about older computer hardware, YouTube began recommending videos about trains - are they trying to tell me something?

I don't remember it to be. It's just manual/forced driver install from device manager.
BTW, older drivers don't work well for nGlide if that is the goal.

I meant the INF editing if you want the card to show up as a 5900XT, which can be a bit daunting for people who are just starting out. You can of course force it as a standard 5900, the difference is purely cosmetic.

I don't use nGlide on my own 5900XT, but still good to know, in case others want to do so.
