Hi all,

I've recently become aware of the PicoGUS Project and it's compatibility list. They state they have an issue with Star Control 2.

This gives me pause because I clearly remember having a bizarro random-sounds-playing bug when I played Star Control 2 back in the day on my actual Gravis Ultrasound! I remember getting some kind of bug-fix or patch from somewhere, but I have no recollection of where or what form the fix took.

Does this jog any memories for anyone else? If we could hunt down a copy of that fix I'm sure the PicoGUS creator would love to have it.

Hrm. The only real conclusion in that thread is the problem is fixed by running on DMA 5, and even that conclusion is challenged.

I don't remember reconfiguring the GUS to get the game to run properly, but this was a *long*-ass time ago, so I don't fully trust my memory.

To add insult to injury, I don't think PicoGUS can use DMA 5 - It's an 8-bit ISA card, and DMA5 is part of the 16-bit ISA extension.

There is a sound patch for Star Control II, but it doesn't address the GUS. It is called "Star Control II Pro Audio Spectrum 16 Patch" and the description says "This patch fixes sound problems with the Pro Audio Spectrum 16 and Pro Audio Studio 16 sound cards.". Unfortunately the link is to a FTP server... have a look at Accolade's archived tech support page -> https://web.archive.org/web/19961023164606/ht … achptech01.html. Maybe you have some luck to find it somewhere else!?

kind regards

Might the GOG releases perhaps already include the patch OP is looking for ?

The Star Control 1 & 2 bundle is currently selling there for the less than I would need to pay for a candy bar, so if OP has a physical copy from back in the day, it might be worth trying.
