VOGONS

I've recently got an industrial Kiosk (Re: Looking to mess around with a Transmeta Efficeon) that have XGI Volari XP5 (seems to be same as V3) as graphics card.

It came with Windows Vista pre-installed, without any drivers though. I've installed a bit more spec-appropriate Windows ME there (windows 98se consistently hangs on attempts detecting hardware).

However I now struggle with finding working drivers for that. I've tried multiple driver packs from different sources - driver seems to get installed (in most of the cases - only manual install works, setup returns an error about INF entry missing), but later on nothing happens, I'm still stuck with default 640x480@16 colors.

WIth vogons driver 1.16.02 (http://vogonsdrivers.com/dosearch.php?q=Volari) and 1.13.15 from the internet I got a bit different result - Windows ME boots, blinks (like changing graphics mode) and then turns into black screen.

There was driver version 1.09 mentioned somewhere on the forum - with it Windows boots in 640x480@16 colors but PowerStrip detects chip and shows its clocks, Windows allows to try to increase resolution, requires to restart but reverts to 640x480 16 colors.

So far I've tried:
1. 1.16.02 from vogons - black screen
2. 2.096 (6.14.021.2096) from Dell (modified inf file to add subsystem that I have) - seems to be oldest I was able to find. - doesn't work
3. 1.09.75 - doesn't work
4. 6.14.01.1130 - doesn't work
5. 1.13.15 - black screen

I've started to think that probably those drivers that results in Black Screen - are actually working drivers, however either something is broken and prevents image to be displayed. One of the theories - Volari theoretically supports multiple outputs, and what if it accidentally forces one that is actually not implemented on that board? (I won't be surprised if on industrial board they did some interesting solutions for unknown reasons).

So maybe some one actually know something about registry keys that those drivers uses, for example how can I force one of the outputs?

For some context, I had a similar aspiration with an old Dell Inspiron Pent.4 laptop that had used such graphics chip as a way of offsetting the heat output it was most famously known for - certainly was better than the “Extreme” Graphics 2, which only could handle DirectX 7 thru hardware. The driver which comes supplied from their site are exclusively for WinXP, however it does provide some clues. The signed cert made it obvious the V3 was its desktop counterpart, the ‘Reactor’ ver.1.09.75 was for the V3XT & further iterations that were based off the more performant S3 Xabre graphics whereas the basic V3 was based off the Trident CyberBlade XP4 hence Xp5 was marked as the next iteration. To troubleshoot why it wouldn’t show any output after being installed, turns out your theory was a good direction to start. I cross-examined the XP5 driver with the desktop V3 for WinXP and began extracting any strings out of each the binary executables for the desktop driver on Win9X while having experimented around with all I could find of potential interest until achieving something workable. The installer is smart enough to where I can copy my own version of the driver INF which’ll have it show as a separate display adapter available to install. I’ll showcase what I conjured up right below, feel free to try it using ver.1.13.15 since the latest ver.1.16.02 is quite finicky with the display output for at best the same performance as far as I’ve observed:

I've added this to vintage3d, would you try that?

It works just as fine with my modifications, its the same version sourced on the driver CD that came with these line of video cards (findable on IA w/ online documentation albeit labeled for the V3XT) - it's just that ver.1.13.15 is a far newer revision (ver.1.06.01) dated several months in advance and so it's that particular one I opt to use. Here's a download link to the one I use if you'd like to mirror it elsewhere.

Thank you, it is done. Though I do not understand how did you use the T2200 file with the driver.

I couldn’t upload as INF so it’s simply renamed as TXT hence the distinction I made in renaming the file extension. I advise to change the SUBSYS portion of the Hardware ID to match the one currently installed seeing as how I left in the default - but nonetheless, it should still be as simple as copying into the appropriate Win98 folder and selecting the XP5 option when the installer asks you to. Also on a side note, I left ‘LCDPageEnable’ toggled since I was experimenting with the rotational options to no avail making it rather unnecessary to leave enabled as it’ll only result in a blank page whenever accessed.
