Hi,

I've tried ess 1948f maestro-1, (noisy and sounds poor) and creative Live sb0060, this one better but nothing impressive. Sometimes laggy and looks like lack of sound fonts.

System win98 se.

Any other recommendations?

Currently thinking of another build as I have another MB with Isa ports.

What games are we talking about?

Do you want the best card in terms of compatibility, cleanest output (SNR), et cetera.

If I had to choose only one sound card, I would've chosen a CT3980. EMU8k, real OPL3, wavetable header, 8MB (or 32?) max for soundfonts (emulate a GUS or MT32)

i386 16 ⇒ i486 DX4 100 ⇒ Pentium MMX 200 ⇒ Athlon Pluto 700 ⇒ AthlonXP 1700+ ⇒ Opteron 165 ⇒ Dual Opteron 856

Game classics like Doom, wolf, duke etc

1. Quality (reproduction, and sound)
2.compatibility
I'd look Into DOS aswell if it sounded right

So you're talking about playing dos games from within Windows 98?
Audigy 2 is the last card with Win9x support and has cleaner output then the Live but the dos emulation is exactly the same, you'll notice more difference in Windows games though.
Aureal Vortex 2 based card sounds "different" then creative but is still using emulation for dos.
Yamaha YMF is probably the best sound wise for dos with true OPL and XG Midi, but lacks any features for Windows games.

ISA cards open up alot more options, however the cards typically are noisier than PCI unless you modern cards like the Orpheus http://pcmidi.eu/index.html

Remember though dos games typically recorded sound at low rates then heavily compressed them so sound quality is never going to be amazing.

Can two cards for instance one isa for DOS and second one pci for win98 to be installed at once?

Indeed, I recommend the same brand for both cards to ensure compatibility

Yes. It's definitely possible to have multiple sound cards installed in one computer.

It's just a matter of assigning free hardware resources and ensuring there are no hardware conflicts.

486 DX4-100 with 6 sound cards
486 DX-33 with 5 sound cards

That doesn't ensure compatibility. Different model cards by the same manufacturer (e.g. Creative Labs) can have differing levels of compatibility, and may or may not work under different operating systems.

The main considerations are:

1) What operating systems and sound standards a particular card supports.
2) What hardware resources are needed to run that particular card.

486 DX4-100 with 6 sound cards
486 DX-33 with 5 sound cards

This is what I do on all my PC's that have an ISA slot.
Creative Live!/Audigy card for Windows and EAX

ISA depends bit more on price and availability but top 3 would be
Creative
ESS
Yamaha

all 3 have good and bad points so is worth checking or asking before spending your cash

I've read some topics regarding different sb's and purchased ESS 1868f ISA as it has many good reviews. It will be a pleasure for me to make another vintage setup with k-6 CPU and ess soundcard. And make some Tests in sound SB Live running in win98 VS Ess1868 running in DOS OS.
