i just picked up 1 of these adapters on aliexpress:
it has a master/slave jumper, but it's not working on the same ide channel with a deskstar 180gxp hdd. first, the adapter works just fine alone on the ide channel, but unless i can get it working on a shared channel i'd rather abandon the idea of sata altogether.
when configured as master with the deskstar configured as cs or slave, the bios recognizes both drives, but the post process is slowed down to a crawl and the system refuses to boot off the sata drive. if i boot a live cd i can access the sata drive normally, but the deskstar doesn't show up at all.
when configured as slave with the deskstar configured as master, the bios recognizes both drives and post speed is normal, but the system refuses to boot off sata. if i boot a live cd i can access the deskstar normally, but the sata adapter doesn't show up at all which is the reverse of above.
the deskstar has jumper settings for master, slave, cs and 'dev0 force dev1 present' for both 16/15 head compatibility mode. when i try the 'dev0 force dev1 present' setting, only the sata adapter is detected as slave and none as master. strangely, when i boot a live cd the deskstar is still accessible despite not being detected by the bios and the sata adapter doesn't show up at all as slave.
the motherboard is an iwill kk266-plus (via kt133a, 686b). i've tried to disable udma and force pio mode 4 on both devices with no effect. i've also manually set lba mode (auto, chs, lba, large choices) for both devices in the standard bios settings. is there anything else i can try? i feel like it is so close to working.
would there be any point in ordering this similar adapter or is it just going to be the same ic?
