I already ruled CPU speed out didn't I ??? ... Points to overly-fast modern processors as a cause for the crash, but this shouldn't be the case with the game running in DOSbox with fixed 3000-4500 cycles (0-10% CPU load) . .. anyway ... Sorry to have bothered you, looks like the Colonization version …
