Re: DOSBox Feature Request Thread

ripsaw8080 wrote on 2021-04-01, 05:36: As mentioned in the thread you linked, the machine=vgaonly setting will display the palette switch correctly; however, it will not help capturing. Right, yes. So the request is for WYSIWYG capturing.

Re: DOSBox Feature Request Thread

I know that DOSBox doesn't like Lemmings, so don't groan. I've already read Bradr's excellent explanation of the in-frame palette switching that the DOS Lemmings games perform on VGA graphics cards in Mode D in order to display more than 16 colors per frame ( https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t= …

Re: The Tandy 1000 emulation seems perfect!

Sorry to revive a very old thread. I tried to email you (Ryune) at the address listed on your website, but it was returned undeliverable. I think there might be enough public interest to justify posting this here instead of contacting the OP privately. I hope you subscribed to the thread! @Ryune: …

Re: MMX

Impressive analysis, cfoesch! If someone coded MMX emulation for DOSBox, I'm sure it would end up in the mega builds, but I wanted to point out that there are DOS games that use MMX for one reason or another, which might justify inclusion in the official build. At any rate, thanks for the …

Re: MMX

Yes, it would be counterproductive to emulate instructions that aren't needed in the name of speed, since emulating them would actually be slower. I'm not sure if MMX does anything that can't be done without MMX on JF:FB, so that may not be a great example. I'll see if I can find an example of a DOS …

Re: MMX

The Need for Speed won't run in SVGA mode unless it detects a Pentium processor. NFS doesn't require a Pentium processor, but DOSBox's ability to report a Pentium CPUID allows you to take full advantage of NFS (thank you for adding that feature). I don't know if MMX improves the graphics/unlocks any …

Re: MMX

I know that the policy is not to add anything to DOSBox unless a DOS game needs it, and I had always thought that there were no MMX DOS games. I was going through my recent acquisitions today and found an "Designed for Intel MMX" logo with the text "Enhanced for MMX equiped computers" on JetFighter …

Re: Windows 95 in DOSBox with 256 colors

Interesting. I wonder why Windows 98 would boot in DOSBox when Windows 95B and C have failed me for so many years. At any rate, the author of jDosbox is incorporating stuff from Megabuild 6, and generally trying to get it to run as much stuff as possible.

Re: Windows 95 in DOSBox with 256 colors

It would actually be kinda cool if there was a custom build of DosBox designed specifically for running Win95. 1) It doesn't seem to be necessary. Windows 95 under DOSBox works great for me! and 2) There is one! jDosbox is a Java port of DOSBox. The author tests each commit for compatibility with …

Re: Windows 95 in DOSBox with 256 colors

There may very well be a patch for all of them, but a patch is unnecessary if you just use Windows 95. Windows 95 runs too slowly for me under Bochs, and I've never been happy with the experience under VirtualBox and Virtual PC. The experience of running Windows 95 games under DOSBox is the same as …

Re: Windows 95 in DOSBox with 256 colors

I meant unofficially "officially". :P And yes, there are many guides on this forum, and I'll be adding a guide to RGB Classic Games as well, so there's no need to go over the procedure in this thread. @sliderider: No, because you save the installation on a hard drive image. @Jorpho: All Sega PC …

Re: Editing movies captured in DOSBox

And a question from me: zmbv encoder gives me error messages when I try to use it in virtual dub. Known issue? Any updated versions around? The one I have shows up as v0.1 in vdub. I'm having the same issue. I'm recording speedruns in Windows 3.1, but the game window isn't always 640x480. I want to …
