Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

Okay, but what makes you think that PCem is turning out less accurate results than DOSBox? Are you just saying that setting PCem to the settings on the left side of those equivalencies is giving substantially different results than setting DOSBox to the cycle counts on the right side? Even if that's …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

You mean, more or less rough proximate than dosbox with cycles set to something or other? :-) Regardless of db cycles only relating to itself, DOSBox performance is actually more consistent than pcem last I checked. Are you sure? My experience, and that of most people I know, has been the exact …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

I'd recommend being extremely cautious here - the MAME license is currently incompatible with the GPL license PCem uses. Agreed, of course. Let me more forcefully clarify what I said, to anyone considering working on this: DO NOT ACTUALLY TAKE CODE FROM MESS. However, learning by simply studying …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

PCemFX is definitely cool, but not ready for prime time -- from what I've seen, there were various bugs and instabilities introduced in the process of patching in the shaders. I want to see shaders in PCem more than anyone, but it's not worth compromising the core emulation quality to do it. Another …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

Any more details about this protected mode bug? I don't want to speak too soon, as I'm still pretty early in the process of figuring out exactly what's going on, but the issue I'm seeing is basically this: when in DOS with EMM386.EXE enabled, the emulated system's effective execution rate is …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

SA1988 and Sarah: I ran into the same bug, and it was trivial to fix. Current PCem SVN has the PC Jr., which means the total number of machines is one higher than it was previously, but the variable that keeps track of how many machines there are wasn't incremented to match (or at least, not …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

I have a Core i3 3220 with two cores at 3,3GHz (hyperthreading disabled for now). By default I set PCem to iDX4/75, which is what generally works well. A quick test shows the Winchip 90 reliably at 100% at the DOS prompt. Any Higher Winchip fails to do so. Ummm, there is no Winchip 90. First …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

xBRYAN2000x, Wow! 100% speed on a 240MHz emulated system? I didn't even think that was possible. My system has a fairly high-end Ivy Bridge i7 and I can barely manage 133MHz. Would you mind sharing your host (i.e. your actual system, not the emulated one) specs with us? Particularly your precise CPU …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

Thanks gerwin and VileRancour. Looks like this crashing is probably a result of some finicky detail of how D3D is implemented through certain video chipsets versus others, or perhaps it depends on the exact version of DX being used? In any case, I'm in the process of debugging it on one of my …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

Thank you so much gerwin -- if you're experiencing the crash as well, then we can rule out the possibility of it being related to Windows 8.0. Are you on 32-bit or 64-bit XP? I've now tested it on 3 computers and all 3 have the problem, but I don't have access to a 32-bit system. Edit: Thanks again, …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

Cheers on the 8.1 release Sarah, it's wonderful to see how thoroughly you addressed all the various little things that I and others pointed out. The new memory configuration style is perfect! Other than Sarah, no one has confirmed one way or the other whether they're experiencing the D3D + CGA/MDA(/ …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

Since Sarah can't reproduce the D3D + CGA/MDA + Hard Reset crash, I've gone ahead and tried it out on another machine. Exact same problem: PCem totally wipes out as soon as it attempts to reset the emulated system. Also tried more different emulated machines/configurations (Hot-433, Award 430 VX), …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

If you minimize and then maximize in no resizable window ddraw mode the emulator stops showing any output. At least you can press ALT+F to exit. By the way i can only emulate a 386DX33 at full speed on my machine (Athlon64 3500+). If "resizable window" is off, you shouldn't be able to maximize at …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

Just discovered a serious bug that really ought to be looked at before v8 is finalized, assuming anyone can reproduce it: when using CGA or MDA on any machine (only ibmpc and ami486 tested so far, but I assume most or all are affected), in D3D mode, a hard reset crashes PCem. Hercules and VGA/SVGA …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

about the S3 on PCem, the Bahamas64 is a better choice than the Number Nine 9FX 330. The Bahamas64 still has a few bugs, here I list them: 1. on Windows 3.1x, Write.exe has scrambled colors with the S3 Vision864 drivers in either 8bpp, 15bpp, 16bpp or 32bpp. 2. on both Windows 3.1x and 9x, …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

So for those of you with more time than me, what is the best BIOS, video BIOS and PC version to run Windows 98? And which would work best on this emulator, the original 98 or 98 SE? I can't answer from experience, but logically your best bet should be the 430VX, using the standard Award BIOS that …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

Also, PCem is quite unique in the emulation world. Dosbox is great, but its approach is very different and over that, you have Virtualbox and VMWare. Not much anything else in between, even if you consider Bochs, QEMU or MESS. PCem feels like the real thing and is very easy to use! Other projects …
