Re: Tips for getting X-Com: Apocalypse working

Thanks for the tips. X-COM Apocalypse runs basically out of the box for me on DOSBox 0.72. To get it to install I used the following options in my dosbox.conf. [autoexec] # Lines in this section will be run at startup. mount C "E:\DOS" -freesize 1024 mount D "G:\" -t cdrom -usecd 0 -noioctl To get …

Re: Thank You!

Appreciate the effort, but the download is broken somehow. Even "save target as" didn't work. It looks to me as though the Planet Mirror site hosting the files has been hacked.

Thank You!

Just wanted to say, I set up and ran DOSBox 0.70 for the first a few days ago on my new computer, and it ran flawlessly, "out of the box". Thank you to whoever it is that has poured themselves into this, it is definitely one of my favourite things right now. Part of my joy was in discovering that my …

Re: Rise and Decline of the Third Reich

Might just as well tell him now (i.e. there is no "Available contiguous extended memory" reported at all, it's not a question of the game not liking it -- see mem /c), just to make sure that you're on the same wavelength. V. Done. :) Get a load of this. This was what pissed me off in the reply I …

Response from Microsoft

"Available contiguous extended memory" is the extended memory available for the Interrupt 15h interface. This memory is not being managed by an extended memory manager in Windows XP, such as Himem.sys. That's why some older programs fail to run. The technician then went on to say the that problem …

Thanks Stiletto, I thought that the name for that was BIOS. However I see from the definition that the BIOS is always(?) firmware, but firmware isn't limited to BIOS. Regardless, I do have the most recent firmware available, as far as I know. I will however double check that.

Re: Rise and Decline of the Third Reich

That is weird beyond belief. As I suggested on the X-men post, I believe, try updating your controller's firmware. Or, alternatively, get a motherboard with a built-in RAID controller, like the K7T266-Pro RU2 by Microstar. (I love this motherboard. It was a bitch to set up the RAID and Windows 2000 …

Try looking for firmware updates for your Promise controller. Curiously, what are you using? Its a Promise Ultra IDE controller. Its actually a Promise RAID controller, but I have it set to the Ultra mode. It is an integrated peripheral on my Soyo SY-K7V Dragon Plus motherboard. I have two hard …

I have discovered that I have a hardware conflict that is affecting DOS emulation in Windows XP. There is a good chance that this is the problem, or at least part of the problem I was having with X-Com Apocalypse. The other person who was trying to get the game running, Fisu, should probably try …

Re: Rise and Decline of the Third Reich

This (i.e. no mention of EXPANDED/EMS memory), unfortunately, means that your system has a problem. In the past it has been observed that systems that have "bootable" cards (such as more intelligent SCSI cards, or even potentially some network cards) interfere with WIndows' DOS emulation and …

Re: Rise and Decline of the Third Reich

OK, first strat with the default VDMSound settings (i.e. delete any VDMSound shortcuts, do "Run with VDMS" with the LaunchPad so thet you get the Wizard, choose "default settings", and that's it). The default settinsg give you EMS. Now, if the game does not work with the default settings then …

Re: Rise and Decline of the Third Reich

Where in the FAQ is there a mention of checkboxes? If there is such a mention I'd like to take it off. Its in the FAQ for (I believe) the earliest version of VDMS. There's a picture of the proper memory settings for the pif. I will set them on default and see if that helps the situation. Maybe that …

Re: Rise and Decline of the Third Reich

Looks like you don't have the EMS driver installed. Are you using the VDMSound GUI? If you were and you used the shortcut with the little music icon then the EMS driver would already be installed. This is what is confusing me. I am using the VDMSound GUI. I also have all the DOS memory options …

Re: Rise and Decline of the Third Reich

To copy/paste from a DOS shell you need to run it in a window. Then, click and DRAG across what you want to be copied, and right-click. Actually you have to choose mark from the "edit" option on the menu that pops up when you right click on the title bar for the window. Regardless, here it is. …
