Re: windows 98 says "Please wait while windows prepares to run this program..." for some apps; why? What is it doing?

It took me a while to figure out, but my understanding is that you're starting Works from a DOS prompt, and it displays that text in the DOS prompt before starting Works in a different window. I think I confirmed my understanding because in Windows 98 SE, I renamed something else to WORKS.EXE and I …

Re: Finding old software by name or keywords

FWIW I reached out to him, not holding my breath on a reply. I've been able to find the stack and the resource file (both are freeware) but I wouldn't know the first thing about getting a 35 year old hypercard stack working on modern equipment. I have plenty of retro Windows computers, but not a …

Re: DOSBox debugger

At least in 0.74-3, in the MEMDUMP* commands there is error checking for the call to fopen(), but not for the calls to fprintf()/fwrite()/fclose(). Sorry, I'm not going to offer a patch for this as I don't have a build tree set up and haven't built DOSBox in a very long time!

Re: w i n d o w s

in Windows
Wich brings me to my next Topic, Multibooting. I have read through some Posts and Threats beforehand and Im a little bit confused. Can I just Format another Partition and install some other System on it and it'll be fine, or do I need to mess with Windows 2000s or XPs (or potentually Windows 98s) …

Re: GPT disks on windows XP SP3 (partially solved)

in Windows
I don't even need internal support for GPT. In that case, if you don't mind performance being affected, presumably you could run an operating system that does support GPT in a virtual machine, e.g. under VirtualBox. Software like VirtualBox can generally be set up to directly access a physical disk …

Re: Finding old software by name or keywords

I might have been too overeager with the link I removed 🤷‍♂️ But overall it’s a terrible grey area ;( That's understandable! I've been looking for an old bit of MAC Hypercard software, is there a resource for that? I don't know so much about Mac things, but I found some shovelware CDs when I was …

Re: DOSBox debugger

I'm having an issue with memdump/memdumpbin - for some reason it's not producing a memory dump. I've tried with and without running the program under DEBUG (MS-Debug). DosBox gives me the correct log message of "DEBUG: Memory dump success.", however I cannot find memoydump.txt/bin under my current …

Re: PCI Modem Cards

in Milliways
I think I heard or read that some of these cards could potentially be used by Asterisk , so one could built their own PABX - and hence have something that old phones and modems could connect to - but I'm not sure if I ever found any information about what cards are supported, if any. I ran out of …

Re: Finding old software by name or keywords

You are walking a thin line with this thread. We do not allow copyright infringements on Vogons and thus can barely tolerate archive.org (and that is sadly questionable from a legal view). Please do not post links to sites that host software that is not theirs to host. Sorry. I intended the thread …

Re: Drivers and graphics card for autocad R12/R13 under DOS?

in DOS
http://files.mpoli.fi/ has lots of old drivers. https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Afiles.mpoli.fi%2Fhardware%2FDISPLAY+autocad shows some display (and printer) driver matches for Matrox, S3 and Trident. However I can imagine that AutoCAD drivers might be hidden in driver packages that are just …

Re: Finding old software by name or keywords

Good morning, I have found many interesting IBM files in old IBM's ftp server but none of them is currently available. Do you know if those files have been moved to another servers? Thank you very much. For instance: DOS Utilities (ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/dos_util) I just did a Google search for …

Re: Software named "ScsiServer" for Winodws NT4

Well, I always had interest in SCSI networking. It used to just be a means to an end for me, but I realised more recently how powerful it is! In my younger years, I've connected an 810 and an 875 together and used it for CDROM-sharing and a shared HDD on that bus (one computer Win9x, other computer …

Re: Stuffing new Win98SE computer: ideas?

No worries! I suspect that what you want to achieve isn't possible because I think you simply can't have two separate bootable FAT partitions for DOS and/or Windows 9x which can see each other. The normal solutions are either to hide partitions, or to have both DOS and Windows 9x boot from the same …
