This has only happened to me once on a relatively modern lenovo latop and the cause was a broken usb port with shorted pins. I straightened the pins to stop touching on another and the problem was fixed. I am not saying it is the same in your case but maybe someone else will find this information …

Try this: I had the same problem back then with my Celeron Tualatin 1400 + Geforce 6600GT AGP in mother nature and the last option solved it for me.
