Re: How much computer is enough?

in Milliways
The vast proliferation of smartphones and tablets seems to have given older computer further life as now, most mainstream code is written for less powerful devices and made to be more efficient. Hardware introduced from 2007-onward after the 4gb barrier was eliminated will mostly go due to fatigue …

Re: IBM PS/1000 486DLC2-66

The main thing, as far as I can tell, that made the Blue Ligntning perform so well was the addition of an internal L1 cache which a proper 386 lacked. Clock for clock, a 486SX will be a little faster. However, if you run anything dependant on FPU, a 486DX will blow the thing away. Having the FPU …

Re: IBM PS/1000 486DLC2-66

Yeah, most likely an Overdrive socket. On OEM systems that had the CPU soldered to the motherboard, you would sometimes have a socket provided with which to upgrade to a nicer CPU. I've only seem them in the flesh on IBM systems but they were used at least a little by all the OEMs from the era. As …

Re: IBM PS/1000 486DLC2-66

While not particularly reccomended, on a few video cards I had without that pin, I used the end of a heated paper clip to make a hole for the pin and never had trouble Did IBM ever sell different video options for that computer? That proprietary card seems goofy but so did a lot of things on many …

Re: My new - Compaq DeskPro 386s/20

^Because in those systems, the IDE ribbon only has two connectors: hard drive and mobo and the latter is proprietary. Compaq, it'd seem, REALLY didn't want people changing around hardware in these computers. In fact, if I remember right, you need a floppy boot disk with BIOS configuration software …

Re: My new - Compaq DeskPro 386s/20

These old /m systems were usually shipped without any parts required by an optional but not ordered component. Your best bet is to order a 5.25" floppy drive from one of these things with the fittings intact. Also, there were various Prolinia systems from the 1991 to 1994 timespan as well as some …

Re: My new - Compaq DeskPro 386s/20

With the Deskpro 486s/25m I used to own, there were some microswitches on the CPU board to adjust multiplier amongst other things. With both, the 386 and 486, there were no locked frequencies and the 386 and 486 boards for these systems were usually the same save for the actual chip put in place.
