Can anyone offer something on this? How hard is flashing a BIOS? I am contemplating flashing a BIOS on a CUBX board. And yet every time I have ever tried it has ended in failure. I really think if you wanted to work with socket 7, you'd be better off with the mvp3 chipset. I'd suggest a Tyan s1590 or even an Epox MVPG3/4/5

Every time I gave ever tried to flash a BIOS is has ended in disaster - seriously. I was thinking about ordering a replacement chip from this place: http://www.biosman.com/replacement.htm Has anyone every had any dealings with them? Do they look legitimate?

Wow - I will have to look at that. I didn't realize how dated this board is. Since the CPUs are multiplier-locked I didn't think the board would make that much difference Thanks for the input

What I mean was switching to one the board will definitely support, like a 750 or 800. Seems like the trouble starts going over 800. 😜

I have one of those Tyan boards running a K6-2/500, have had it for years and it is a good board. I also Have the ATX version of that board.

I never did care for the slot architecture. That was one thing K6-2/3 had going for it - it was a socketed chip. IMHO that gives you a wider range of coolers to choose from.

It's true of any processor that you see diminishing returns ramping up the multiplier - that's why bus speed is so important

I had an old Conner drive - 1275 MB - that I used first in a 486 DX4/100 and later in a pentium 166 MMX. That drive had some sentimental value - I was sorry to see it go. It got to where it would take longer and longer to spin up, and eventually died.

People say K6-2 was as fast as pentium. But my experiences in things like rendering. mp3 encoding, video encoding - a k6 was 1/2 the speed of a same-clockspeed p3. (Yeah I know, all those tasks involve floating point math, and that was K6's weakness)
