Re: best hard drives

in Milliways
The only WD drives I have ever had died within a year - that was enough for me, And yet last year I salvaged a computer off a garbage pile - that turned out to an old 11-gig WD drive that was still running. I gave it to a friend to use in and old 233 MHz computer.

The last time I got a maxtor it died in a few months. The replacement they sent died in a few months. I got a second replacement but never used it - by that time I said forget it.

best hard drives

I am sure this will open a big can of worms and may have been covered before - but who makes the best hard drives? Western Digital? Seagate? I have always been a Seagate fan - I have a whole slew of ST340016A (40-gig) drives - some approaching ten years old. Not one has failed. And yet I hear after …

Re: problems with DOS and TASM

I want to thank everyone who made comments or offered suggestions here. I finally did get the program to work - by reserving a block of memory and having the BIOS call dump it there (as opposed ti dumping it directly to screen memory) Also - I believe the problem with PROC and ENP was actually due …

I appreciate all the feedback :happyhappy: I had read about the stepper motor startup and did try calling the routine several times And I was trying to read only one sector. I was setting up the video screen (b800h) as the buffer, ES=B800h Actually in the original program I was reading it into A000H …

You guys are going to laugh - it was a 486 d4x/100. BUT consider the progression - I went from a C64 (used for a long time) to a used XT (short time) to a used 286 (short time) to the 486. 286 to 486 DX/4 was a big jump 😎

What I don't understand is the fact that the code worked perfectly under windows 98 DOS. This is what I cam currently thinking. I'll bet windows 98 is not giving me the real int13h - it may even be replacing BIOS code with its own equivalent. Is it not possible that as motherboards advanced, int13h …

problems with DOS and TASM

Hey All, I have a very puzzling problem and was hoping someone could shed some light on it. I was running Turbo Assembler (TASM) 2 under windows 98 and had written a program to read and write individual floppy disk sectors using the BIOS call. Now after building a real DOS box - the program will not …

Re: CPU limited

I don't know about voodoo2's, but I have used voodoo3 in everything from a 233 MHz PMMX all the way to a 1000 MHz P3. The last gaming box had a p3-650. I was planning on replacing it with something faster - but that processor seemed more than fast enough for what I was doing (half-life, unreal, …

buying versus building

What do you guys thing about buying versus building? Which is better? I have always built my own computers - that way you control what goes into them. But the last computer I built was an athlon XP and i am still running windows 98. I am not even sure what would a good board and CPU to get anymore. …
