Yup, after you reboot, Windows should reinstall the VIA hardware. My guess is the driver installer isn't working correctly for some reason. What steps are you going through to install 98 (98SE?)? I admit I grabbed the photo from a random PII ebay auction. Here's another example. Something like this should have no problem with a Slot A Athlon, assuming it can be attached. This baby is $8 with free shipping and a PII CPU. ;) The mounting systems in SECC and SECC2 are different, to start with.

If you asked me, I would go with Voodoo 2 SLI + Riva TNT2 (I have some sentiment for TNT2s as well). As for sound cards, I recommend SB Live!, Aureal Vortex cards are somehow problematic and I never managed to make it work.
