I found the culprit! It's SOMETHING installed from the Unofficial Windows 98 SE SP3 by user PROBLEMCHYLD from the MSFN forums, that is causing the issue. That's why i don't install some unofficial patchs, the only 'unofficial' thing in my W98 systems is the unofficial usb driver, nothing more …

I guess because the main issue is internet access is slowing down that PC and sucking down CPU cycles and I somehow don't think that it should be doing that. Yeah, I read that bit, Windows 2000 locks up on boot and putting the jumper back doesn't seem to help. Not upset about any of it though, it sure was a challenging troubleshoot. :) Probably the problem is data corruption because of way too fast ram Of course even if you put the jumper back the data …

That's a PCChips board... they did a lot of weird stuff like that. I can't say I've ever seen that particular one though.
