Re: Retro Rig Photo Thread

It could look OK if the yellowing was removed, I've read (here and other places) about various ways of doing that but have never tried. My main issue with this thing is that it's not designed to handle running on it's side. The CD drive doesn't have the little tabs to hold the disk, the CPU fan …

Re: Retro Rig Photo Thread

Wow I suck, that's 2 for 2 I've gotten wrong. It is 72 pin, 4 * 16mb. (the sticker on the front says 32mb but someone has upgraded.) The riser is in the middle, here are a couple of pics. Thanks for the reply's, I haven't looked at overclockers.com.au yet so will head over and check it out. http:// …

Re: Retro Rig Photo Thread

Hi guys, I picked up an old PC on gumtree the other day because it was cheap and only a few mins up the road. It seems like a strange beast to me but I don't know much about the era so thought I'd mention it here and see what people thought: - Packard Bell "multimedia" desktop - Pentium 233 MMX, …

Re: 486DX4-120, what the what?

Excellent thanks for the info, your description of the 'normal Pentium' matches what I have perfectly. It's still quite a stylish heatsink and fan, I might find a use for them some day but in the shed they go for now.

Re: 486DX4-120, what the what?

Yes the DX4 is an AMD. And there are some Cytrix / IBM's in the pile too. It was about 30 chips on final count, more than I'll ever need! I'm not sure if they are pentium overdrives but they (3 of them) look like this: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium/TYPE-Pentium%20overdrive.html The heat sink …

Re: 486DX4-120, what the what?

Great thanks for the info. The VLB board I have does support 3.3v I think so I'll check it out, maybe I can just drop it in (and then fiddle with the jumpers). Gold Coast ey? Nice one. I'm in Melbourne. Out of interest where do you get your retro bits from in this vast, mostly empty land of ours? …

486DX4-120, what the what?

Hi, I snapped up a 'grab bag' of old CPU's off eBay and was expecting a whole lot of rubbish, but it's some pretty interesting stuff - all 486 / early pentium. Intel, AMD. About 20 chips in all and some coolers. One of them is a Pentium overdrive I think which I've never seen before, but the one I'm …

Re: Retro Rig Photo Thread

Holy crap! I love the look of this Vectra Is this case proprietary or will any motherboard fit in there? It's proprietary so if the motherboard dies then that's probably the end of it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it lasts longer that I do! Very solid machine.

Re: Retro Rig Photo Thread

OK here are my recent creations... 486dx2 66 OPTi 895 MB 8mb parity RAM 210mb HDD Winbond VLB IDE Card Cirrus Logic VLB Video AWE64 sound DOS 6.22 It took me a while to get the bits together for this and originally I wanted to re-create my ~1994 era SX33 in a desktop case, but ended up with the DX2 …

Re: Geforce2 GTS performance, VIA AGP problems?

in Windows
Yeah I'm not saying the performance was terrible - certainly not sub 30fps. But it was slowing down in certain places and I expected it (based on the system requirements) to pump out a consistent 60fps. It sounds like that's not a reasonable expectation with this game on a PIII, and I have no …

Re: Geforce2 GTS performance, VIA AGP problems?

in Windows
OK I've invalidated my test results a bit because a Geforce2 Ultra I'd ordered has shown up in the mean time and I've replaced the GTS with it, but: - clean install of Win98 SE - 4.43 VIA drivers (I was already using those) - ver. 45.23 of the nVidia drivers The geforce is reported as 4x AGP now (a …

Re: Geforce2 GTS performance, VIA AGP problems?

Thanks so much for the responses guys, I'll give your suggestions a try and let you know how it goes. I will post some pics of my rigs when I get a moment; I can't tell you how exciting it is that someone else is interested in them. My wife has nothing but contempt for my beautiful beige boxes - I …

Geforce2 GTS performance, VIA AGP problems?

in Windows
Hi, first post here from a long time lurker. Apologies if a thread exists for this problem but I never have much luck with the search functionality on this site. Anyway I've built myself a Windows 98 SE box (and a 486, AND a Pentium 200...) to re-live some happy times past, but I think I'm having …
