The Ensoniq Soundscape isn't properly intelligent mode compatible, it just does some trickery to make it a bit more compatible than your standard UART MPU-401. It doesn't work with Gateway for example.

I had to turn the amp on mine down quite a bit because it was too loud, but in saying that I wasn't comparing it to a DB50XG, which is brutally loud too.

I tried a POD 83 for a while and found it to be a little bit unstable at times - I can't remember the scenario but it couldn't run something that a regular 486 in the same motherboard could. A DX33 or DX2 66 are the classic 486's in my book but DOOM won't run smoothly on those, so I'd go with DX4 or …

I've settled on a K6-2+ 450Mhz for my DOS machine, but the slowest it goes is ~33Mhz 486 territory. That's with L1 and L2 cache off, and the lowest multiplier (using SetMul of course). I've had limited success using SetMul and then a slow down utility on top of it but those are troublesome and …
