...it's quite possible that the music did sound loud via your Ensoniq Soundscape but maybe you might also remember that the SoundScape wasn't actually an OPL2/3 FM equipped card but rather it used it's OTTO synthesiser to emulate Adlib OPL2 playback. Could the MIXER internal DOSBOx command do anything about it? I tried it. The FM setting I increased. The music does become louder, unfortuantely so does the sound effects. It appears both music and sound effects are affected by the FM adjust. The others (Except MASTER obviously) has no effect. …

I think the Rastan music in the PC version was supposed to sound that way. I mean it was originally low. I do not recall it being low at all. I distinctly remember this game and it's music. Subject says it all. Play Rastan setting Adlib as the sound card. The background music plays but is very faint. Note: If you're not prompted for sound/video (or any options when starting the game), just delete the rastan.cfg file.

Not sure what .ini files you mean, but the dosbox.conf was default besides the cycles setting. River Raid doesn't work out of the box for me, as it hangs in some in 0x200 loop or so, thus i used a debugger enabled version (maybe that's why it works). Sorry - my bad, I meant *.conf files Not *.ini …

Just out of curiosity, have you verified that the jittering does not occur in non-PCjr games running in non-PCjr mode in DOSBox on your system? Maybe either you or wd could post your dosbox.conf and compare it to the other's to see what's different that could affect things. No other games "jitter", …

About the original problem: flickering seems to be gone if the cycles are set appropriate, maybe this works for you, too (setting the cycle count rather low). I have a 2.8GHz P4. I tried the following "cycles=" values: 1000, 350 (default for me), 250, 100, 50. The lesser values do affect the game …

machine=pcjr DosBox version 0.65 Images are autoboot PC Jr Cartridges (*.jrc images). Additionally, changing the... cycles= ...value has no affect on the jittering either. -Trebor
