Re: Should I keep my Presario 2256?

I think this is getting philosophical... Some random thoughts: I'd say your system is nothing special. In particular it is not very flexible, you'd best use it as it is. (Small power supply, no AGP, integrated ViRGE with 2MB, only one free PCI. Is that a K6-300 as opposed to a K6-2-300?) If you are …

Re: PowerVR Fun Thread

OK, got official permission to redistribute the SDK. Uploaded here: http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fileid=431 Lots of interesting stuff in there, even if you don't want to program the chip yourself.

Re: Ark Logic PCI, an interesting VGA card.

Of course the DAC is important for the image quality (sharpness), but even more important are capacitors which are there to reduce RF emissions (high frequencies). Since a sharp image needs high frequencies using capacitors may make the image blurry. Several years ago before DVI was standard I read …

Re: what does DOSBOX still do imperfectly?

Besides 3dfx no other 3d accelerators are supported. Of course most games that support any 3d acceleration support at least 3dfx but there are some noticeable exceptions. My favorite example is Terminal Velocity which only has S3D support - the sole reason I got myself a ViRGE GX from Ebay.

Re: Should I keep my Presario 2256?

Neither S3's S3D (ViRGE chips) nor ATI's CIF (Rage up to Rage Pro) are emulated yet so games with native support for whatever chip is in your system might look better on the Presario than in DOSBox. Another point would be 3d games that will only run with Windows 9x (probably not that many, at least …

Re: PowerVR Fun Thread

In case anyone is interested: I was able to get the old PowerVR Series 1 SDK from Imagination Technologies by asking. (Got the tip from somebody's blog.) I asked if it could be redistributed but didn't get an answer. I didn't have to sign an NDA, although NDAs are mentioned in the SDK. So if you …

Re: IBM PC350 Video card advice

The CPU is below the minimum requirements for Unreal so you won't be very happy. It will probably run, though - or should I say crawl? The P133 matches the minimum requirements for Half-Life. It is supposed to need at least a 8MB video card but people seem to be able to play it with a Voodoo 1. I …

Re: IBM PC350 Video card advice

I had a look at the specs of an IBM PC 350, didn't notice that you wrote the exact model before. The S3 chip is supposed to be integrated on the mainboard. Is this the case? If it is, do you know if the PC will accept another video card at all? If not, a separate 3D accelerator like a Voodoo1/2 is …

Re: IBM PC350 Video card advice

Virge DX? Are you kidding? (That chip is be interesting if you want to run native ports only.) X-Files does not seem to be a 3D game. A Permedia 2 is probably slower than a Voodoo 1 in most games, and it is supposed to need a faster CPU. A Voodoo 1 should be ok but why not a Voodoo 2? Should be …

Re: Computer-use pet peeves

120hz refresh televisions solve some of those problems so i don't see why they can't make computer monitors with 120mhz refresh. I suppose you wanted to say 120hz both times and not 120mhz? ;-) There are 120hz TFT computer monitors. Admittedly they are targeted to 3D shutter glasses but you can …

Re: HP Omnibook 800CT with PCX2!

Interesting fact, vetz, thanks! I think the only other native PowerVR game I tried was Unreal which was a Windows game from the beginning. I didn't check if other patches/versions (Ultim@te Race, MechWarrior 2) were for DOS or for Windows. (MechWarrior 2 was originally for DOS so this would have …

Re: HP Omnibook 800CT with PCX2!

There are game patches for PowerVR which run in pure DOS. I played Tomb Raider 1 on a m3D myself. You could be right about bus mastering being a problem, though. Maybe more video RAM is expected? Your model should have 1MB. I suppose that's not uncommon for 2D only PCI video cards which where the …

Re: ISA VGA Card?

dirkmirk, I agree with you on the systems that should use an ISA VGA card. About the benchmarks: My strategy when comparing ISA VGA cards is to measure linear throughput when sending data (writing) to the card. Most fast-paced games calculate the image in system RAM and then copy it to the card so …

Re: What is your age?

38 in one week. Married, one child, second child due in march. I don't really have time to game but occasionally I play adventure games together with my wife, last one was Tales of Monkey Island. (A few years ago we played Monkey Island 1 using ScummVM on a HP iPaq - very cozy.) She is not …
