I normally use 64bit OS on anything with 3GB or more ram, there is no reason not to. but if you have more ram with Xp 32bit and want to use it I recommend using the rest as a ramdisk for the pagefile, but, 32bit OS and 2GB of ram should be smooth for basic usage, an SSD would change things more. …

I would recommend a fresh windows 8.1 or 7 install before anything else, an SSD if you can... e4600 to e6750 is not a huge upgrade and I don't see it changing much for basic usage http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/64?vs=60 also some older boards might not support FSB333

the MX 440 is as fast/faster than the high end VGAs from around 2000 (p3/k7 era) I think DX7 games really benefited from k7/p3, it looks to me like this build would have to much GPU compared to CPU performance.
