I've seen monitors with such specs go from more than 300€, which is completely absurd in my opinion. I bought from eBay an LG 19" CRT Flatron, 1600x1200 max., for 35€ plus 12€ shipping and I've been wondering since if I could have scraped one instead of paying for it; although it's in an "as new" …

According to this site the Cyrix is the winner among 200 MHz. CPUs, although I'd go straight for an AMD K6 considering eBay prices of the Cyrix part. I politely dissent. SiS made a decent chipset for the P3 Tualatins and nVidia chipsets for AMD were way more than just decent from the nForce2 onwards. Although it's currently on the testbed, and although I haven't spent many hours testing it, for the moment my GeForce3 Ti 200 is working fine with Windows 98 in a DFI K6VX3+/66 with a VIA MVP3 chipset. I've only test Unreal Torunament so far, which was the game I had more at hand.

Now that we speak about this SB_LINK stuff, is Sound Blaster AWE64 PCI the only card with a SB_LINK header? I have this header also on my IBM PC 300PL and I haven't been able to secure one single card that uses this stuff.

Is this by any chance the manual of this motherboard? Also, I think the S3 video card is 2 MB total size. The soldered V53C16258HK40 chip seems to be a 512 KB EDO RAM module.

I ran tests for this years ago. You're right, VIA AGP (or something about their chipsets) affects GUI performance. It's tangible and measurable. I don't believe it's limited to NVIDIA cards. What's interesting about NVIDIA on VIA is that 2D performance starts off nice and fast, but after 5-10 …
