I don't understand -- how is real DOS being run on these modern CPUs like i7s? Virtual machines? I can't find anything on this site or youtube with regards to this.

That's reassuring. I'll probably go with the 512GB SSD for XP then. So far I've installed Windows 98SE without any issues and the only drivers I've installed were for the graphics card (45.23) -- I didn't install any chipset drivers and the only device manager !'s are PCI USB controller and LAN …

Some more things to note from someone that repairs CRTs. Unplug it when not in use. Keep the contrast and brightness as low as possible. Dont power it off and on regularly. If your going to be away from it for 10 minutes leave it on. Never use windex or a similar cleaner on the screen as it will …

I didn't think Voodoo 4s had good compatibility in DOS with 3dfx/glide patches making V2s or V3s, at most, work well. Wouldn't a PCI Voodoo 3 be better for a 6 in 1?

Thanks for all the replies/suggestions. why not some S3 card or trident? i used trident back then in the win3.11 era I'd try Trident TGUI9440. Very common, and slow... Not that much slower, though. Looks like the GGUI9680 is much slower than the 9440 in DOS. Alliance ProMotion 6422 is another option …

animations running too fast is more likely than not still the cpu running too fast I'm not so sure about that, in this case. At 66x2 and with all caches disabled the machine runs like a 386 that is perfect for Wing Commander. A few people here mentioned playing that particular game on a real 386 …

It's never and issue that the gameplay itself is broken by speed (that it always the CPU) but rather that certain animations move way too fast and look off. One such game is Might and Magic III -- there are others but I can't recall at the moment. To the topic -- are there no such PCI graphics cards …

As far as I know, there is no way to down clock a Voodoo 3's core speed in DOS. It can be done in Windows but even then the 3dfx tools has a limit to how low it will let you lower the clock. I don't have a free ISA slot for a graphics card.

I can down-clock (and have done so) the CPU and disable caches with SetMul... I'm not not sure what else I can do? The slowest the AGP CLK can go through jumpers is sync'd with the FSB @ 66Mhz, PCI slots go to 33Mhz.

I'm jealous. I wish I could play Deus Ex for the first time again! I can't complain though as I've been experiencing a ton of retro games for the first time that I missed because I didn't have a PC - currently going through the Sierra adventure games.

I guess I'll see. I don't plan to try to do any work-arounds or patches to get '98 to use more than 512MB RAM -- I'll just limit what it can see/use and go from there. I might have to pick up a 512KB module for the install if I don't have anything smaller than 1GB though..
